Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary

See the rescued chimpanzees

The Ol Pejeta Conservancy has been working with chimpanzees and other great apes since 1993, when the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary first opened.

The sanctuary provides life-long refuge to orphaned and abused chimps as well as caring for chimpanzees rescued from the black market. Take a tour through the sanctuary – the only place in Kenya where these fascinating, endangered animals can be seen – and learn how the chimpanzees were rescued and nursed back to health.

With round the clock veterinary support and a realistic, stimulating enclosure, chimpanzees are gently nursed back to health before being introduced into one of two large groups at the sanctuary. By day the chimpanzees live in spacious natural enclosures – exploring, climbing and socialising with each other – returning to their indoor enclosures at night.
