A paradise retreat on the Mombasa coast

Located on tranquil Galu Beach south of Diani, Kinondo Kwetu has a wonderfully secluded feel due to its position, nestled between rocky cliffs and long stretches of white sand beach.

Surrounded by sacred baobab trees, family-owned Kinondo Kwetu provides rustic, barefoot luxury with a home-away-from-home feel. The intimate resort has just seven suites, three cottages and a beach house – each with its own character; accommodation here has been individually designed and features traditional craftsmanship and Swahili-style decor.

Kinondo Kwetu offers a range of activities, from horse riding to scuba diving, as well as water sports including water skiing, wake boarding, sailing, canoeing, boat excursions, stand up paddle boarding, snorkelling and deep sea fishing. This is also the perfect place to relax – bask in the sun with a chilled cocktail in hand, take part in a gentle yoga class or unwind with a massage or beauty treatment at the spa. Ascend the viewing tower to watch as the sun sets over the crystal clear Indian Ocean or enjoy a meal here, if celebrating a special occasion.

Suited to couples and families, Kinondo Kwetu is a truly special beach hideaway on the Mombasa coastline. Retreat here for a warm welcome and unwind in whatever way suits you.

  • Partake in a variety of activities or relax – the choice is yours

Best place we have ever been

I came with family for one week. The place was incredible - total barefoot luxury relaxation on a massive scale. Beautiful horses grazed in paddocks near us, Colobus monkeys played in the trees, a phenomenal sunset could be viewed from the beach or from the water tower. The food was excellent, plentiful but healthy and a snack menu was available throughout the day should you get hungry. Cocktail menu was vast and delicious. Every evening, you would eat in a different area of the resort which made for a fun surprise. A plethora of quiet nooks to read or sunbathe in, there were two excellent pools. Even the sunbeds were the best I’ve experienced - large and comfy each with their own pillow and mattress. The staff were all sweet and kind, nothing was ever too much - service truly fantastic. I could have stayed forever!!!

Beautiful resort with relaxed atmosphere - worth the money? Almost

Hertfordshire, United Kingdom

We wanted somewhere special to celebrate our 30th anniversary - and after getting up at 5.30am for the previous 7 days on safari, we also wanted somewhere that was quiet, relaxed and exclusive. We were intrigued by the promise of a maximum 34 guest capacity at Kinondo Kwetu - but actually we went out of season and there were only 6 other guests the entire time we were there. We had a cottage directly on the beach which sounds idyllic. However, be warned. There is no glass in the windows and the sea is VERY rough and noisy with the waves crashing on the shore 24/7. If you are a light sleeper you will struggle with these cottages and maybe better off booking a room in the main lodge house. The rooms are "quaint" - decorated in a simple, African way. We didn't need air conditioning (out of season) but we can imagine that it would be a problem in the hotter weather. The shower and washbasin took at least 5 minutes of running before we had any hot water. Our room was cleaned twice a day. The food is excellent - there is a 3 course set menu each lunch time and dinner time. This is an ALL INCLUSIVE resort - the menu is displayed on a blackboard throughout the day - so if you don't like something you can tell them and they'll make something different for you. The bar has a good selection of beers and spirits (part of the AI) but the wine selection really lets this hotel down. There is a choice of 2 mediocre white and red wines, and 1 rose. When you are paying $400 per person per night, and eating lobster and fillet steak, you would expect a decent wine to accompany the food. A nice touch is that there is no set dining room - and as other reviewers have said, tables are set up in different locations each day - so the view is always different. The staff are what makes this a really special place - they are all attentive and friendly and they only work short shifts - so you see someone different every day. The downside to this is that if you request something not on the menu eg. Decaff coffee for breakfast, no-one remembers that you have it as it always someone different serving you. It then takes a while for them to get it. It's a bit difficult to swim in the sea - you have to walk down a concrete walkway over the dead coral and there were no fish to see - so we went on a snorkelling trip to the sandbank further up the coast - where all the tourist hotels are. It's only when you see these places, with the tourists crammed in like sardines, music blaring out and kids screaming constantly, that you realise what a piece of paradise Kinondo Kwetu really is. So, in summary, a beautiful place with wonderful people and fantastic food. Almost 5*
