Governors' Main Camp

The heart of the magical Masai Mara

The setting of the Governors' Camp is so exceptional that when it opened it was reserved exclusively for Kenya's colonial governors.

Nestled among trees on the banks of the Mara River, the camp is in a prime position to view bird life, hippos and crocodiles. Offering an authentic safari experience, the canvas tents are luxuriously furnished with en suite facilities and private verandahs. From July to October the camp is the perfect place to experience the magnificent wildebeest migration.

Practically faultless!

Karachi, Pakistan

Governors’ Camp Masai Mara is a totally canvas-tented facility, well-appointed and comfortable, and even luxurious. All staff is extremely courteous, pleasant and helpful (as indeed are all Kenyans I interacted with). The food is gourmet standard, created fresh by a team of expert chefs. The accommodation tents are spacious and well-appointed and have everything one can need. En-suite toilets have running hot and cold water, separate tap for drinking water and all quality fittings. The safari jeeps are strong and in good condition, and the driver-cum-guide knows his Mara! Governors’ Camp also operates its own Cessna planes to bring you from Nairobi and back. The only unpleasant experience I had with Governors’ Camp was on return flight to Nairobi on March 01, when the flight scheduled for 10.45 am left at 11.15 am, just because one guest/passenger had reached the airstrip without settling all his accounts, mainly the park fees, and then spent half an hour with park rangers sorting it out at the airstrip, while all other passengers were made to wait in the aircraft. This was frankly ridiculous and he should have been left behind to take a later flight, instead of inconveniencing all other passengers. My own schedule for the rest of the day in Nairobi got messed up because of this.

Such an over-rated tired place

Nairobi, Kenya

Having been to several camps in Masai Mara I was truly disappointed with this one which is one of the older ones around. The tents are small and very tired. There is no element of luxury considering the charges. There is accommodation I was told to allow a capacity of 100 people. I shudder to think what happens when it is full. We were there at an off peak time and already saw several times how the service suffered in the staff trying to accommodate only a third of capacity. The lounge / bar area is small. The location of the camp makes it impossible to go out of a very small area as it is surrounded by rivers - this means that over two days you are covering the same ground over and over, if you cannot cross the river as has been the case in the recent months. It seems there has been little provision for the recent rains - there were not enough umbrellas for guests to walk to and from your tent - ours was at least a 15 min walk away in the rain. In the two days we were there quite a few random guests were asked to be in our safari car for game drives - and so we had to be a little bit squashed for space. First time in all the 5/6 times I have been to Mara, despite other cars leaving the camp with one or two people. Plus points - very good driver - in the recent rains, the driving has become challenging and our driver coped very well. And good food. Overall - I would not return as there are much better run places for better value.
