With its plethora of wildlife and the Big Five ready and waiting to be seen, its no wonder that Kenya is home to many national reserves, parks and animal orphanages that are well worth a visit.

Shaba National Reserve

Located close to the Samburu National Park, and used as the setting in the film 'Born Free', the Shaba National Reserve offers remote wilderness in abundance. This beautiful reserve features riverside forests, scattered woodlands and dry grasslands as well as plenty of flora and fauna. The reserve's main attractions are the giraffe, zebra, oryx and ostrich but you'll also have the chance to spot elephants, leopards, cheetah and buffalo wandering the plains. For such a small area, the reserve also houses a huge array of birds including guinea fowl and sandgrouse. Enjoy panoramic views of the reserve which is dominated by the Shaba Hill Volcano, and be at one with Kenya's natural beauty.

Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage

This orphange will charm and enchant you and is a haven for baby elephants who need rehabilitation and protection. Watch a baby elephant being exercised and bathed and learn more about their life stories that are bound to touch your heart. Additionally, the orphanage is home to other hand-reared animals such as antelope, zebra, buffalo and more. You'll get to meet the infant animals, learn more about the keepers that look after them and revel in the joy of seeing these small creatures be taken care of.
