Jordan's contrasting capital

Only a 30-minute drive from Queen Alila International Airport, the capital of Jordan is a growing metropolis and is the ideal place to start or end any itinerary. Dating back over 2,000 years, there are plenty of historic sites to see. Take a trip to the Roman Theatre for a look at the entertainment of the past, and watch as performers take to the stage. With a seating capacity of over 6,000, climb to the top for some great views, and a great workout.

Visible from the theatre is the Citadel, peering over the hill top and inviting you to take a closer look. With some of the best views in the city, this archaeological site offers so much more than the grandeur of the Temple of Hercules at the top. The site itself is believed to be one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited places.

In the heart of the city lies the flamboyant Rainbow Street. Often called a destination in its own right, Rainbow Street is the perfect place to take a stroll in the evening. This narrow one way street is best seen on foot due to the traffic that builds up. There are great restaurants, shops, and cafes to stop in. Or, head to one of the nearby hotels for some rooftop bars with stunning views over the city.

In contrast to the historic sites of old Amman, the new and modern downtown district is like a new city altogether. Over $10bn has been invested in a project to expand on Amman’s appeal. Welcoming new shopping boulevards, modern hotels, and new entertainment, this previously neglected area has been transformed in to a must see area for any visitor.
