Second time around was even better!

Just returned from a second stay at SSC last week and I'm even more in love with the resort than I was last time. Our first stay was in 2016, when they were renovating the Italian Village. We traveled with another couple in 2016 and all four of us so enjoyed the week that we re-booked for 2018, except we brought a third couple this time. We did butler walk-outs in the Dutch village both times, although SSC is one of the Sandals resorts where butler service is probably not as big a deal as it is at other Sandals resorts. Restaurants are generally pretty casual and especially in the off-season are not crowded at all. But I'll say more about butler service later. I LOVED the upgrades that Adrian Whitehead has put in place in the two years since he took over. The over-water bungalows, the wedding chapel, Latitudes bar, extension of the jetties, the renovation of the Italian village and the pools and a complete overhaul of the French beachfront all have made an enormous difference in both the looks and the feel of the property. Bravo! The staff here is hands down the most attentive and friendly of any of the four Sandals resorts we have visited, and really, given the high bar that exists system-wide, that's saying a lot. I have encountered literally no one at SSC who was anything other than delightful. We have eaten multiple times at each of the restaurants, and the food and service were excellent at each. One surprising highlight was Guiseppe's. I did not expect to get a world-class Northern Italian meal at a resort in Jamaica, and yet I really think it was the culinary highlight of the week. We had a chance to meet the chefs at each of the restaurants over the course of the week and could genuinely heap praise on each of them. (The one exception to this is the room service, which was consistently poor, with food arriving slow, ill-prepared or wrong. Or all three at once. ) Each Sandals has its own unique vibe and flavor, and the groove here is laid-back and distinctly non-party crowd. I was more likely to engage groups of fellow guests at 6:30 am than at 11 pm. It's not that there aren't a lot of fun things to do because there are a ton of activities, but If you're looking for an all-night party, I'd choose another resort. If you're looking for spectacular sunrises and sunsets and the most unapologetically romantic and intimate setting in the universe, you'll love it here. Butlers: like I said earlier, there are some Sandals resorts that are tough to navigate well without a concierge or a butler. This isn't one of them. With that said, I think butler service is especially attentive and delightful here, simply because they are not as crazy with reservations and general navigation of the resort as they are in Ochi, for example. So they find ways to make your stay special that I really couldn't imagine anywhere else. Example: the six of us were interested in some truly authentic Jamaican food, which is tough to come by in a resort that's mostly catering to American and European tastes. So our butlers (I'll name them below, because they were AWESOME) put together a special lunch for us our last day on the resort with oxtail stew, coconut rice, escovitch snapper, pickled vegetables. What a treat! And that was one of a dozen little ways they just made the visit about as perfect as you could hope for. I'll say it again, really the entire staff we encountered was lovely and deserve shout-outs. But I'll send some special love to Camille, Claudius, Omar, and Devaughn. They took exceptional care of us for the week. We'll be back again.

Anniversary in Paradise

My husband and I returned from an amazing week at Sandals South Coast on Saturday. We truly had the most spectacular time at this resort from the moment we stepped out of the shuttle. It was pouring down rain when we arrived. We were escorted into the main lobby after ensuring that our bags were safely placed. We sat down and had someone take our paperwork to get us checked in. We were offered a glass of champagne while we waited. Nelson aka “Shakira” aka “tall Kevin Hart” sashayed over to us to inform us that he was the only diva in the place lol. He was entertaining for the short time that he was in the lobby with us but would become a friend as the week went on. More on that later… While sipping our champagne and enjoying the beauty of the lobby, the general manager, Adrian, came over and introduced himself to us. We had spoken with him in regards to some issues we were having prior to our arrival. It meant a lot to us that he took the time out to come and say hello to us. We were then escorted to the Club Sandals lounge to complete our check in. Shanice gave us a huge Sandals umbrella to get there. We were given drinks and offered snacks while we completed check in. Once complete we were escorted to our room in the Italian village by Tavoy. He gave us a tour of our room and told us the numbers to call if we needed room service or anything from Club Sandals. He was very pleasant and made sure we had everything that we needed. We were starved by this point and decided to venture out for lunch. We weren’t sure where to go or what to eat. Thankfully, we ran into the resort manager, Carl. He gave us a rundown, in the rain mind you, of all the restaurants and which ones were open at that time. He was so nice and accommodating. We truly appreciated him standing in the rain to help us out. The restaurants: Sushi on the Sand Our most favorite restaurant was Sushi on the Sand. We ate there 5 times during the course of our 7 night vacation. RJ, the manager, was phenomenal. We loved seeing his face every time we visited. He’s incredibly nice, accommodating, and professional. He remembered us each time we came back. Chef Napoleon was fantastic! During our first visit the food we ordered came and then Chef Napoleon sent us additional items to try. Another night we ate at the sushi bar and he passed us items as we dined. All were spectacular. My absolute favorite rolls were the Seared Tuna Tataki (signature roll) and the Spicy Crispy Shrimp. I hate mayo and ordered it without it. They were happy to oblige. The ambiance of this restaurant was amazing. It sits right on the water so you can hear the waves crashing. It’s stunning. Schooners We loved Schooners. This restaurant also sat right on the beach with a beautiful view. This was our second favorite restaurant. We couldn’t decide on entrée’s so we ordered two each. The steak and lobster tail are delicious. Order both! Our waiter that night was fantastic! His name was Tevar. He brought us our dinners plus a side of shrimp. Not only that, he asked if we were celebrating anything. We informed him we were there celebrating our 5 year anniversary. He came back after dinner with dessert, a chocolate that said “congratulations”, and he and a few other staff members sang us a song. It was really special and we truly appreciated it. Neptune’s We ate at Neptune’s at Sandals La Toc for our honeymoon. That was one of our favorite restaurants there. When we found out there was one at South Coast I was super excited. This one did not live up to my expectations. I had the tilapia filet burger. It was really thin and really dry. The restaurant itself, like the ones mentioned above, sits on the water so it had a beautiful view. I just wasn’t a fan of this particular meal so we didn’t return to it. Giuseppe’s We had pizza for lunch twice. I didn’t care for the signature pizza, frutti di mare, as it was a little fishy for me. But I’m not a huge fish fan so take this with a grain of salt. My husband ordered the pesto chicken pizza and I loved that one so we switched. I went back a second time and that’s what I ordered. I saw another guest with a Caesar salad. I didn’t see it on the menu but asked for one and our waiter was happy to get one for me. Jasmines This restaurant is indoors but the décor is beautiful. The food we had was amazing. I can’t remember the name of my meal as it wasn’t on the menu but was a special for the evening but it was some type of sweet and sour chicken and shrimp and absolutely delicious! The Bangkok Cooler specialty drink is AMAZING! Have one with dinner and take one to go! Jerk Shack The chicken at the jerk shack is so good. The views are the best from this restaurant as it sits directly on the water. We had lunch with Chevon and Bones here. The food, conversation, and company were fantastic. Our waitress, Shakira, was super sweet and took care of everything! Bayside My husband and I ate breakfast at Bayside 6 out of our 7 days. Almost all of them Jennive was there flipping eggs like a pro with a smile on her face. I looked forward to getting in her line, watching her skills, and chatting with her for a few minutes. She is incredibly sweet and fantastic at what she does. We also ate here for lunch a few days. Each day there is a different themed lunch. There is something for everyone and we really enjoyed that about this restaurant. The Managers/Returning Guest Dinner I truly cannot say enough good things about each and every person employed at Sandals South Coast. The General Manager, Adrian, was so nice and made sure every facet of our vacation was perfect. He truly went above and beyond and we sincerely appreciate him for all of it. Carl, the hotel manager, would stop and chat with us whenever he saw us. He truly cares about his guests and ensures that everything is going smoothly. He stood in the rain with us to give us the scoop on the restaurants. He stopped and talked with us at dinner one night for about 10 minutes. Tuesday night was the returning guest dinner. There was a cocktail hour portion to the dinner and we spoke with lots of other couples as well as managers. During the dinner each table had 9 chairs. 4 couples sat at each table and I wondered why there was one chair left empty. Moments later all of the managers were introduced and each one then went and sat in an empty chair at each table. OB the water sports manager sat at our table. He gave us insight into Sandals South Coast, Jamaican culture, sports, etc. He has many years with the company and had a lot of great information to share with all of us. When the main course of the dinner was completed all of the managers got up. They returned a few minutes later with dessert. Each of the managers served dessert to the guests. That was truly one of the highlights of this trip. The fact that all of these people are managers and they are serving us food spoke volumes about this resort and the management of it. Entertainment Staff Last, but certainly not least, I must tell you about the Playmakers. These individuals truly made our vacation spectacular. My husband and I “set up shop” at the Riviera Main Pool each day. Chevon aka Peacock was the first Playmaker that we met. Our first morning we went to the pool and Chevon and Makeisha were starting the Couples Scavenger Hunt game. My husband and I typically don’t play the games, we just watch from the sidelines. But we decided to join in on this one. This was the first of EVERY SINGLE GAME WE COULD POSSIBLY PLAY for the week we were there. We had so much fun that we joined in on every game that we were there for. There was supposed to be a pool (billiards) tournament that my husband wanted to play in. No one else signed up so Chevon played pool with my husband. Another day Nelson walked in the pool fully clothed to get the guests in on some fun. He hung out with us and chatted about life, Sandals, our similarities. He’s a super ball of energy when he’s getting everyone pumped up but he’s so sweet and I truly enjoyed our heartfelt conversations. Toni aka Happy Feet also got in the pool fully clothed to play a game of pool ring toss. I actually won this game and was given a handmade wooden box from one of the vendors. Happy Feet is so sassy and so much fun. We loved playing games with her. And girlfriend can DANCE! Do yourself a favor and go see some of the shows at night, especially the talent show. These people will not disappoint you! Deshae aka Bones and Chevon did a group contest that had multiple rounds which got about 20 people in the pool involved. We had lunch with Bones and Chevon a couple of times. They are two of the sweetest guys I’ve ever met. They told us so much about themselves while ensuring that we had the most amazing time. Chevon is like the little brother I never had. I enjoyed hanging out with him all week. He had the day off one day and I missed him being around playing games and talking with us. Bones is so down to earth and has big aspirations. The staff for me, each and every one of them, is the biggest draw. I’ve been to a few resorts but none had the staff that South Coast has. Every single person we encountered had a smile on their face and ensured that we were having an incredible time. I can’t wait to book our next trip! There are only two things that I didn’t love about Sandals South. There is a lot of sea grass. I saw a lot of bad reviews because of this but it isn’t a deal breaker for us. I wish it wasn’t there but we’d definitely go back. Just make sure to bring water shoes, especially because there are sea urchins. The other thing I didn’t care for was the price of the photos. There are photographers at every turn and they take amazing photos; however, if you go to purchase them it’s going to cost you $495. That’s a little crazy in my opinion so we didn’t purchase any.
