Good Times at Sandals South Coast

Surrey, BC

First the negatives: The checking in process is a disaster. Upon arrival to the resort, you are greeted like family with a cold cloth and a glass of champagne. Then you sit in the lobby and wait. At this point your trip may have started several hours ago, you are probably sleep deprived and hungry. There is an air of disorganization and you suspect that you may have been forgotten. Time seems to slow down and you can’t tell if you will ever see you room. People are attended to at random by staff carrying a tablet. Your frustration level rises as you know you meticulously filled all the information, including your credit card, in the days and weeks before your arrival. You try and get attention and eventually someone takes you seriously and you are asked to sign the tablet. You get your room key and you are escorted to your room by the most pleasant staff. This process repeats itself in many of the Sandals and Beaches resorts, unless you are Butler level, it might be better. This is shameful. The check in process should be much smoother and less frustrating. Sandals has all the info needed. Credit card info is collected prior to arrival, if not it should take seconds to get upon arrival. Your room key should be waiting for you upon arrival. Sandals appears to be putting some guests ahead of others. It is understandable that there are categories that provide more perks than others. Making some guests feel inferior is a very unsavory practice. Sandals is a premium brand and they charge for it, and rightly so. Excluding some common services has the effect of alienating guests. If you are not in a concierge or butler level for instance, you don’t get room service. There are ‘public’ areas that are permanently reserved for higher categories. Sandals is right to distinguish higher categories, omitting services and flaunting is very poor practice. There are other minor quirks that do not distract from your stay. Why do you have to supply your room number every time you go for a meal? Why do you not have small snack, like nuts, at the bar? Why do they still carry cheap well liquor bottle while they display top shelf liquor bottles all over? Why don’t they have regular shuttle service between one end of the resort to the other? Now for the goods: The trip from Montego Bay Airport to Sandals South Coast is about 90 minutes door to door. It is a beautiful ride. It winds through mountain, the road is curvy, and the last 30 minutes is through a new modern road. The drivers are skillful and entertaining. The resort itself is just beautiful. It is well landscaped and well maintained. It is big and there is a good deal of walking. While you can call for a golf cart to move you from one end to the other, this service is all but impossible to get unless you are staying in over the water bungalow. The beach is great, there is sea grass growing at the end where the water sports are, you may wish to use water shoes. The water is calm and warm. Water sports are plentiful and easy to access. The water sports staff are great. The two of us tried all restaurants except Jasmines. All are very good. Schooners was a favorite, the setting is ideal, food was very good and best of all the staff are absolutely amazing. We were looked after by the dream team of Garnet, Oshane, Abby and Barry. We can’t remember the names of the others, all were fantastic. Shout out to the cooks, the unsung heroes. At Neptunes, we had great food and service, Shantel and Talita you were so good to us we will always remember you. At Bayside, we were treated to great breakfast and dinner, they even helped us get dishes from another restaurant. Nauda, Lenessa and Lashura we love you. Roberto looked after us well both at Sushi on the Sand and at Bayside. Café de Paris was a focal point for us, they make excellent Espresso drinks, even when the machine was not at its best. The crepes were good as well as the snacks, sweets and ice cream. Patrice, Denese and Taylor were sweeter than the sweets they served. They made sure our coffee was the best and kept it coming. We miss you all. The entertainment was amazing, we discovered that Michael Jackson is reincarnated at Sandals Southcoast on one of the shows. We took catamaran excursion to Floyds Pelican Bar, totally worth it. Despite the negatives, the resort gets 5 stars.
