Disappointing

We stayed in Excellence Playa Mujeres before and we liked this resort, so I came to Excellence Oyster Bay resort with my family to celebrate my birthday. This was very disappointing experience. We ordered ocean front club suite. When we arrived we were assigned a partial ocean view room. We spent 2 hours arguing with club reception to change the room to unobstructed ocean view. Apparently, ocean front was not available. We were compensated with a tour of glistening lagoon instead. When we got a new room assigned, we asked to have our luggage transferred to the new room. Guess what, the luggage got lost... they couldn't find it for an hour. The restaurants don't take reservations. They are on first come first served basis. It may take up to an hour to get seated. And the service is so slow, the dinner will easily take you 2 and a half to 3 hours. We decided to wait for the Lobster house restaurant, so we ended up waiting until almost an hour and by the time they brought main course, they were out of lobster. They brought us 3 lobsters for 5 people at the dinner table. To make this even worse, these lobsters were undercooked. When we checked into the hotel, they asked us for $600 deposit in case we want to charge anything to the room. We were very much surprised that they actually charged us an extra $10 for each purchase when we charged to the room. This was not a good experience. We would not recommend this hotel to anyone. Very disappointed.

Working toward 5 star

White Plains, New York

This is our 4th time staying at an Excellence resort but the first time at Oyster Bay. Oyster Bay only opened last spring. It is lovely. They are still working out some issues, but they are improving weekly which showed even during the 10 days we were there. Editing and proofreading of every menu and even the welcome booklet is a necessity. This new hotel is beautifully designed. Most of the staff is very friendly and eager to please. The resort is aware of some of their shortcomings, and they are very receptive to constructive criticism. In fact, early in our stay, Ricardo, an Excellence Club Manager, was on the beach asking guests about their stay. We gave him a gentle earful, both the good and the bad, all with the hope that things would improve for a possible stay next year. After that earful, he went out of his way to check in with us daily. He even arranged for us to meet the Executive Chef of the Resort, Jose Vallejo who is full of energy, ideas, charm and recipes. We were lucky enough to be treated to 2 off menu meals made by him and his staff which were superb. I hope they allow him the freedom to make some changes at the restaurants and improve some seasonings and menus. There is a noticeable lack of busboys at the restaurants (esp. Magna) and the beach to pick up dirty plates, cups. Bedroom: We chose an Excellence Club Ocean View room. It is comfortable and lovely to look at, but it has some design flaws. What is the point of the sliding divider in the room as it is full of artistic holes and lets light and sound through? Similarly, the head of the bed abuts the sinks in the bathroom, and again, the partition design is full of holes so light and sound go right through to the person sleeping in the bed. There is lots of closet space, a safe, bathrobes and slippers, a beach bag, and housekeeping /DND buttons that can be seen from outside the room (although when the DND button was on, they still called the room by phone every morning to see how my stay was! So ridiculous!) The room had a comfortable balcony but I couldn’t use it due to the mosquitoes and gnats. Instead of the body lotion they provide in the room which seemed to attract the biters, they should supply Avon’s Skin So Soft lotion, or something like it that has a natural bug repellent in the ingredients. Beach: Quite narrow but large enough for lounge chairs and umbrellas. Water is shallow and full of sea grass beds but also starfish, sea urchins, stingrays and various sized fish, sand crabs and snails. Drink service at the beach was non-existent our first few days but improved as the days went on. We stayed in the Excellence Club beach area. We were not interested in the noisy games at the main pool, and were happy that we could not even hear most of it from the Excellence Club beach. With the exception of awesome Club bartender, Calvin, we thought that there should have been significantly more service to guests on the beach – ready made drinks, tasting samples, fruit skewers… Apparently this was done at the pool but not at the Club Beach. Makes no sense. The Club Beach Bar snacks were also silly. Every day it was rice and chicken wings, nothing else. Every day. The Main pool had more of a variety of foods each day. We paid more to be in the Club level and yet were given less. Not cool. The Excellence Club should have food available from 8am to 11pm, and not just a spoon sized bit of beets or peppers/onions. A take out menu of veggie platter, fruit platter, sandwiches, hummus platter, cookie platter, etc. is a must. Restaurants: A really unique and nice touch is that every restaurant has a vegetarian portion to their menu. Having said that, the way it is arranged makes the menu and the ordering quite confusing for both the diner and the waiter. It needs to be redesigned, but it was a welcome sight. The Grill (steak) was excellent, and for you chocolate lovers, it had the best chocolate dessert at the resort. Safya, our server, was terrific. Spice (Asian) was also excellent, but a few suggestions: Plain Sake instead of the fruity “sake” they have available; Seaweed salad, which is on the menu, is not actually available; Green tea ice cream for dessert; Some of the dishes were very spicy without any warning about that on the menu (pad thai). The restaurant manager, Arlene is a doll and even went out of her way to get me the chocolate dessert from The Grill to cap off my meal. The Hibachi dinner was better than most but not memorable. Chez Isabelle (French) was ok. The main dishes did not come with the sides that were indicated in the menu, and again, the service was extremely slow. Oregano (Italian) was quite good until the desserts which were dry and not tasty. Lobster House (Seafood) was ok. Flavor Market (Spanish tapas) was just not my cup of tea, although Timisha was a wonderful waitress. Magna (Excellence Club) was our worst dining experience, both for breakfast and dinner. It seems to be the most understaffed restaurant in terms of waiters, busboys and chefs. In the morning, no one clears the tables so none are available on the porch, they are usually out of items on the menu, the amount of coffee put into the coffee press varies widely, and the waitstaff seems bored and sluggish. Dinner was even worse. We were there for over 2.5 hours due to crazy slow service even though the restaurant was not even half full. When our orders arrived, changes were made to what was indicated on the menu, without asking us first, even for dessert. Not right. Again, we paid more for the Club amenities, but we felt like we got less. Having said all that, the food was very tasty! Aroma (coffee and dessert bar) is a great addition! But, it should be open until midnight, not 10pm, for after dinner/after show treats. The drinks were great, but those treats, sadly, are mostly dry and tasteless although they look pretty. I guess the good thing about that is it saved me from eating too many. Having said all that about the restaurants, I want to make sure to say that the food choices and tastes were overall some of the best that we’ve had at any all inclusive resort. Spa: So ridiculously overpriced we didn’t use it. Outrageously overpriced. $500 for a couples massage?! Gym: My husband said it was the nicest he’s been to at an all inclusive. With continued improvements, this resort will become closer to 5 star than 4.
