"I highly recommend snorkelling off the beach and around the jetty area to see an array of fish, also the sea is calmer here than other areas of the island so ideal for everyone."

Thank You Oberoi Lombok!

London, United Kingdom

This was my 5th year stay at the Oberoi Lombok – and why do I keep coming back? Holiday time is precious and there are few resort properties that you can guarantee will deliver on the brochure or website promises. But the Oberoi Lombok is one of those. Each and every trip has been different in some way yet the end delivery has been same every time – I always leave, feeling refreshed, spoiled and humbled that I have spent more time in the company of a great team of staff (more on that later). Firstly, I should address the elephant in the room or rather the volcano on Bali. I was due to travel to Bali to travel onto Lombok on the 1st December and my flight was cancelled and then reinstated once the ash cloud moved. During the airport closer both Thai Airways and Garuda Indonesia rerouted my flight to fly via Jakarta (without cost) and my onward leg to Australia had no issues. The information that you see overseas does not reflect the actual situation on the ground in either Bali or Lombok. I made contact with the hotel directly a couple of days before I was to travel to get a full situation report which was much more positive than the overseas news would have us believe. Both Bali and Lombok have suffered immensely during December in terms of lost tourists but at the timing of writing (January 2017) things are getting back to near normal. I know there are plenty of holiday locations in the world but Bali and Lombok will always be a special place to visit and the airlines, hotels and tourist guides are all working together to ensure that all guests continue to receive the high level of hospitality that only can be found in Bali and Lombok and I would encourage anyone who is thinking of visiting not to put off their trip. Back to the review, this year, I booked directly with the hotel and not via a travel agent and took advantage of the rate which guaranteed half board and airport pickups. This meant that I was greeted at the airport by an Oberoi member of staff and also your stay begins as soon as you step into the car! On arrival, I was overjoyed to be welcome not with the normal welcome drink but a glass of my favourite watermelon juice! I love the fact that the team at the Oberoi go out of their way to make your stay, special and individual to you – every morning after my morning walk (do take an early morning stroll down to the jetty – it is best time of the day to see the fish) one of the restaurant team would catch me on the way back and ask for my breakfast order so that they could start preparing it and the Beach Butler team would always make sure that during the morning fruit serving and the afternoon ice cream Papaya was removed for me. Little things I know but little things on vacation can sometimes make your trip. i am a pretty fussy eater - but the Head Chef came and introduced himself the day after my arrival and told me that the restaurant team would make sure that there were options available for me each evening and it worked so well I actually lost weight during my stay! Do make time to go to the Spa. I had a pre-departure pedicure which lasted for weeks afterwards. Also, recommended is the body scrub and massages. A special thank you goes to the gardening team – one because the villas and rooms are set in extensive gardens which are kept immaculate and are a pleasure to enjoy and because during their gardening sessions they would always save me cuttings so that I could enjoy them in water in my bathroom. As I mentioned at the beginning of this review, the Oberoi Lombok has a great team of staff – during my stay this year it was a great pleasure to attend the annual staff party and attend the long service awards presentation. The memories of meeting the families of many of the staff who have looked after me during the years will stay with me for a long time. Events management is part of my working life and given how well organised the event was I would have hesitation in recommending the Oberoi Lombok if you are thinking about holding a wedding or an event.

You get what you pay for

Singapore

I'm sure many have heard the expression that you get what you pay for. That is, mostly in life if you pay more for something then it is (or at least should be) 'better'. Well, that's certainly the case at The Oberoi. Priced as a 5-star hotel, expectations are high. And the hotel didn't disappoint: Spacious and well appointed accommodation; menus with something for everyone; delicious and thoughtfully presented food; well tended grounds with direct access to the beach, additional facilities including an equipped gym, spa, tennis court, bicycles; and a boat house for easy-to-arrange and short hops to the islands just off the mainland of Lombok's north-west coast. But what really make a 5-star hotel a legitimate 5-star hotel is the attention to detail. Too many 'small' things to mention, things that all add-up to make a 'big' thing and an exceptional stay, but if you stay at The Oberoi, and you should if you're visiting Lombok, then you will know what I mean, and you too will probably appreciate that it's the detail that matters. Clearly a hotel with the highest levels of training, supervision and management, with a primary focus on the guest. Thank you The Oberoi, if we return to Lombok, we'll see you again.
