Bali Luxury at its Best

bali

As soon as you drive through the stunning St Regis entrance you know you have arrived somewhere special. The St Regis Nusa Dua is something Bali dreams are made of, I had stayed here many years ago, but forgotten how truly magnificent this resort is. Right from the minute we entered the exquisite lobby, we were treated like royalty, check in was speedy, which was great because I was dying to familiarise myself with the hotel all over again. We were escorted by Edi (our private butler) to our one bedroom St Regis lagoon villa. This villa was beyond what I could have ever imagined, large, luxe and lavish. Décor perfectly reflected the traditional Balinese / Javanese style, opulent but not too over the top. The villa was so large, lounge, dining, stunning bedroom, exquisite marble bathroom, with large want to dive into bathtub. Outside was our own private pool, a bale that you just wanted to lay in all day, but the best part, stairs that led directly into the ENORMOUS, and I mean ENORMOUS, salt water lagoon pool that surrounds a good part of this property. AHHHHMAZING. We made our way to KayuPuti for lunch, I have eaten here in the past, and I was dying for their pasta, the smoked chicken linguine – beyond delicious. KayuPuti overlooks the stunning blue waters of their private stretch of Nusa Dua beach as well as the beautiful blue beachfront pool. The service here is impeccable as is the food. Speak to Harold, the sommelier, there is a reason St Regis has won the best wine list in Bali, and he is it. There is nothing to do here except relax, and it is so easy to do that – lay around, swim, snooze, sunbake, sip on cocktails and take in that gorgeous view. The beach is lined with sun loungers and the waiters deliver beverages and food to you so your sunbaking session need not be interrupted. The staff here are nothing short of amazing, they attend to every request at moments notice, and their Bali smiles melt my heart. From the buggy drivers, to the waiters, to the ever attentive person that answered my requests when I pushed the butler service on my phone, nothing ever was a problem. The gardens are immense and lush, be sure to take a walk thru all of them, you will find the most amazing hidden secret spots. Cocktails and a bottle of champagne in the King Cole Bar whilst watching the fire dancers was the prelude to our beautiful dinner at KayuPuti (whilst St Regis have many dining choices, KayuPutih is our favourite and we were in love with their menu). This restaurant takes on a whole new feel at night, with the gorgeous lighting showcasing its grande architecture. Our sleep was sweet, this super king bed with its incredibly large pillows – was like sleeping on a cloud. Waking up to another day in paradise. Breakfast will break the diet, with much on offer at the buffet as well as many alacarte choices also included from the menu. I need to tell you, we were only booked to stay one night, but ended up staying three…. We just didn’t want our time here to come to an end. St Regis Nusa Dua is a retreat from the crazy that Bali can sometimes be, its so peaceful here, nothing to do except relax and remove yourself from the outside world, there is so much on offer here at the resort, there is no reason to ever leave its grounds. Paradise Perfection.

Truly fantastic hospitality experience at St Regis Bali, january 2018

Tallinn, Estonia

Coming from a country which lies on 59th latitude north, the word fantastic doesn’t roll over my lips lightly. But for first eight nights of 2018, spent together with my daughter, were simply that. Fantastic. Time here (we are leaving tonight) could be easily also subtitled „Hospitality re-defined“. The decision to come here was almost forged four years ago. While staying at the neighboring Laguna (another Starwood property) with both of my kids, we decided to celebrate a special occasion with a dinner in St. Regis’ Boneka restaurant. The impression made by the restaurant and the hotel itself were terrific, leaving me with a thought of wanting to return. As the occasion presented itself (visiting my best friend who had moved Bali some months before), I was naturally drawn to St Regis. The erupted volcano had not yet impacted the hotel prices much, so the new year’s high season price put me off a little, but after some hesitation, the booking was made. We were warmly greeted by butler Victoria and front desk lady Lisa, who made us feel truly welcome. Since I learn trumpet and piano, I asked upon check-in about the possibilities to practice my instruments. I had my trumpet with me, but in a hotel, let alone such luxury hotel, one does not want to inflict trumpet practice sounds on others and the feeling of being a jerk on oneself. They arranged that I could practice at any time in the ground lever grand ballroom, which I did. Piano is trickier. Luckily they had a Yamaha grand in one of the bars, that opened only from 3 p.m. The ladies arranged so that I could practice any time before that, which I did – daily. I guess my biggest gratitude goes to St Regis especially for that. The St Regis suite on the third floor was nice and spacious, with a definite feel of tasteful luxury. On the first morning I was slightly disturbed by some construction noise coming from the adjacent property. A free upgrade to a ground level pool suite was offered, and that was nothing less than terrific. In the regular suite, the TV connections did not quite lend itself to hooking up a PC. The pool suite had been refurbished and when butler Putu Adi (tremendously helpfuland delicate young man) organized a proper cable, we were able to hook a PC to a TV. The beach was one of the best hotel beaches I had ever been to in my entire half a century life. Yes, there have been little bit more naturally beautiful beaches, like in Varadero, Cuba, or Sandals Antigua, but the whole combo of St Regis beat them all. Abundance of lounge chairs. Most comfortable ever. No merchants. Swift and nonintrusive non-stop service. Towels, water, drinks, occasional freebies. Nice. The hotel beachfront is laid out to create an impression as if that’s all there is – this hotel’s beach and only that. Abundance of room, especially for the beach front villa residents. Naturally beautiful sight of waves hitting a small reef some 500 meters away. Nice swimming. The food service, meaning the food and the service, both were excellent, especially in Boneka restaurant, serving breakfast and dinner. The staff, head waiters and waiters and waitresses were all super helpful, the cooks behind the counter smiling and connecting with the clients. The food selection more abundant, just as great as promised on the hotel website, trying to make high-flying sales pitch. Superb! Allow me to specially bring out the Dulang Indonesian restaurant with a set menu, either regular or vegetarian (!). Seems like this place is undeservingly underrated. Should I go to St Regis Bali, make sure you try this at least once. (Kayuputi was great for location and luxury feel, but the food experience did not quite measure up our very high expectations). In the first couple of days we were slightly amused by the staff trying so hard to please us. Until it hit me – besides wanting to keep a job in this super nice environment, hopefully with above average pay, the payoff of the staff members became obvious. By actively wanting to make the guest feel appreciated, by trying to manage the guest’s mood by their contagious positivity (that, yes, at times felt somewhat artificial) the employees reaped the payoff at least as great as us, the clients. Once the client’s mood was elevated, as days progressed, I am sure that employees (exercising this IN ALL DEPARTMENTS, to be exact) sure must have reaped similar emotional gain, regarding their own happiness and well-being. Yes, one could assume that they are forced to behave that by the management. Most likely true. Getting big tips? Yes, but since 11% service tax is levied, non-US clients are not walking around and stuffing bills in every employees pockets in every occasion. Managers watching on CCTV, as a friend suggested? I doubt it very much. Balinese people’s inner warmth? Yes, but St Regis clearly stood out from other 5-star Bali hotels I’ve visited in my three visits. What I AM REALLY wondering about is what is the service level like in other St Regis hotels in other countries. That remains to be seen! The cherry of the cake was Remede Spa. Having received one of the worst massages ever just couple of days before arriving here in Ubud, I got well compensated by perhaps one of the best massages ever received in my life by a long time St Regis therapist Eka. The steam sauna, the Finnish sauna and especially a 10-position massage pool outside. (As I told the chief butler Karba, the finnish sauna was the only element in the whole hotel, that was subpar. But if they want, this can be fixed with 1000 euros and two days worth of work). As I am writing this, I start feeling like I am writing a paid advertisement. Imagine doing it in the hotel on your last day, hours before leaving this small slice of paradise that I have been so warmly welcomed. Imagine taking almost a good hour for doing that. And yes, I got free late check-out, until 7pm, without having to ask for it. But let me remind you, it was me paying them and not pocket-change, not the other way round. This was hands down the best hotel stay ever, as I told chief butler Karba in the morning. Should I ever come to Bali, I will certainly return. Why wouldn’t I? And for the future travels, I will always check if St Regis is around, so that I could see what if the high service here was an exception, or a rule. To finish off, I and my 16-year old daughter were daily surprised, amused and pleased by a fact that it seemed like everything we asked for, the answer was “yes”. There are other hotels claiming that, some even on a pin on the lapel of every employee, but I have never experience anything like that, in any hotel. Free straw hat (actually came in very handy) off to all the kind people working in St Regis Bali. The same goes to the managers of Starwood, under which St Regis operates. Thank you very very much.
