Disappointing

Bergen, Norway

I had high expectations for this hotel. First impressions were fantastic, lovely beach and great rooms. But then to what ruined the experience. The hair dryer in the room is probably from the 1993 construction year and did not work. The room was also very humid as there are openings around the balcony door. Because of this, the room is also not soundproofed. The pool is very dirty and moss grows in the joints. There is also a lot of wasps around the pool area. The food in the hotel was very overpriced, about double the price of other similar hotels. It was also of poor quality. There was also very little food on the menu and room service was not an option. (may be this due to covid-19, but the price can't be defended) Last day we found a well hidden note about breakfast in the room. It was MUCH cheaper, we also got more food. Taxi was also double priced from this hotel. At check out food from the minibar was brought up on the bill even though we had not taken anything. The hotel has good potential but at this price I expect more.

A wonderful old property who needs a little love and attention.

Bali, Indonesia

Another old classic of a hotel, wonderful building and grounds and am sure was a must do hotel in its day. Approached by motor bike and was asked 3 times if I was a guest, then finally ordered to enter via the Staff entrance; they then looked at me weirdly, however only asked twice if I was a guest. Check-in was smooth, seamless, easy. Room keys had to be remade twice. A modern day curse of travelers. Room was very damp and moldy, they provided an oil diffusers to reduce the smell, the damp and mold was to strong to remove. This did affect my sinuses after only 1 night stay. I would not be able to stay 2 nights. The lounge was tiny, no place to work with a laptop. Happy hour is simply and hour, with local beer and wine. Their offerings for food were quickly finished and not replaced until the last minute. I have never experienced a lounge like this in a supposed 5 star property in Asia. As i travel for work 6+ times a year, I would not consider returning to this hotel based on its lounge offering. However it is an old resort so they are not ready for travelers who need to work. The grounds were impressive and the variety of pools and fountains were wonderful to walk around. Staff were pleasant and all had their wonderful Bali smiles on. Breakfast was nice, the restaurant quite impressive to look at. Some hot dishes were luke-warm at best; as we didn't have breakfast included in our rate, and based on the bill; I could not say the breakfast held much value - not sure if they 'brunch' or not - wouldn't be on the top of any list of "must tries". The poached eggs were overcooked (ordered softly poached, yolk was nearly totally hard), sausages bland, mushrooms cold; gammon ham warm and delicious; noodle soup was good. Coffee was nice (had a mix of the Bali Kopi and an espresso to make the right strength) and the juices fresh. Service was friendly and helpful. Signage around the hotel was poor, got lost a lot and it is a big property. As an example, i went for a massage and the massage started 40 minutes later... took that long to find the Spa, be taken to the other spa, get settled, sign the forms and get going... The massage was professional, relaxing and pleasant. It is 9x the local rate... that used to be ok, if the surroundings were incredibly perfect and the local massages not of good quality. Overall a wonderful hotel of yester-year, a grand building and ground; and will be wonderful again one day with a few tweaks to their room condition and services given.
