January Trip

Indianapolis, Indiana

To help better understand this review, we were 2 couples (husbands in early 70s and wives in early 60s with two of us having mobility issues) from Indiana in the USA. We have a 3-year VIP Membership purchased in 2018 and used for the first time on this vacation. We vacationed from Tuesday, January 14, 2020 to Tuesday, January 21, 2020, at Dreams Las Mareas Costa Rica and stayed in a Junior Suite, King, Tropical View (490 ft). Due to flight delay issues, we did not arrive for check-in until slightly after midnight. The resort was closed down by then but there was a very pleasant young lady waiting in the office to get us registered. A Bell Captain took our luggage and escorted us to our rooms via motorized golf carts. As requested at booking, our rooms were next to each other. They were on the 3rd floor but the buildings have elevators. We found out the next morning that our beautiful view looked out to the mountains. The rooms were very nice and well cleaned. There was a balcony with soaking tub, the bed area and the bathroom area. The bed and bathroom areas were separated by a sliding curtain. The shower and toilet areas were separate and covered by frosted-glass doors. Not a lot of privacy but my wife, of 21 years, and I know each other by now. There were 2 sinks and full mirror. My objection, as I have with most hotels, was that the lighting was not adequate enough for shaving. But then my eyes aren’t that adequate anymore either. Keep your balcony door locked because the White-Faced (Capuchin) Monkeys know how to open them and will steal things out of your room. The grounds were very well kept but very hilly. However, a quick call from anywhere on the property will get you a 4-person golf cart to transport you where ever you need to go. One of our favorite drivers was Miguel, who always remembered our names when he saw us. We tried all the restaurants & bars while there. Everyone was very friendly and the service was prompt. While all the food was very good, we liked the El Patio Mexican Restaurant the most. This was mainly due to Carlos, our waiter. Not only was he knowledgeable & friendly, but he had a great sense of humor as well. Next would be Kevin (I think) who cooked & performed at our Hibachi dinner at the Himitsu Asian Restaurant. We also enjoyed free 24-hour room service that that had a good menu and drinks. The beaches are all public in Costa Rica and the one at the resort was well cared for. There are plenty of lounge chairs and roaming wait-staff for drinks. While there are vendors strolling the beach, none were pushy and all were friendly. The pools were quite nice and well laid out. We did rent a cabana with extra lounge chairs all day for $50. It was a splurge but well worth it as the pool areas fill up fast. Our membership also gave us daily access to “Hydro Spa” treatments. Showers, whirl pools, soaking tubs, etc.. It was relaxing but we only used it once. The Spa itself is very nice. The resort is remote so most excursions could take a couple of hours just to reach. In trying to find something, we were told that a van could be rented for $100 for 3 hours. That would allow us to explore the area and visit a local fishing village and the town of La Cruz. They could not guaranty that the driver could speak English but that he would stay with us the entire time. We lucked out! Our driver, Jose, was fabulous! Not only did he speak English, but he was very knowledgeable about the area and clearly loved his country. Having grown up in La Cruz, Jose was able to take us to a local restaurant frequented by the Ticos (native Costa Ricans). Service was slow but the food was great. Victor was our Concierge and very helpful. He was the one that tipped us off about renting the van & driver. He also tried to sell us on upgrading our Membership Package. He was surprised that the original sales people (at an All-Inclusive in the Dominican Republic) had 5 different people trying to close us. The people in the DR were pushy and kept trying to sell us a 30 year package. At our age that was just ridiculous. Victor, and his assistant, were polite and never pushy. Once they understood what we wanted, they dropped the sales pitch. In closing, I recommend this resort, even with the hilly terrain. The Costa Rican people, both on and off the resort, are very friendly and share the “Pura Vida” (pronounced poo-rah vee-dah) life style.
