Arenal Volcano and Lake

We love talking holidays and we're here to help. If you'd like our advice on how to create an amazing Costa Rica holiday, just give our Destination Specialists a call.

Looming large and ominous over the surrounding countryside, Arenal Volcano is Costa Rica’s most active volcano and one of the most prominent in the world. There's not been much major activity in recent years with the volcano only emitting small puffs of smoke and a few rumbles; no one can predict its cycle but the imposing sight is still beautifully arresting. Visible almost anywhere on the island, it's dangerous to get too close to the volcano but a hike or horseback ride to the surrounding area is highly rewarding and you may even have the chance to see small eruptions every 30 minutes, delivering an incredible show of spewing lava and rock. Make sure to visit the nearby Tabacón Hot Springs; set amid lush tropical foliage and colourful orchids, the mineral-rich waters and flowing waterfalls are simply stunning. What's more, the nearby Grand Spa offers volcanic mud wraps, meditation trails plus coconut and coffee exfoliations.

Meanwhile, Lake Arenal is popular for fishing as well as being often voted one of the best places in the world for windsurfing thanks to its strong breeze. Initially a small lagoon, Lake Arenal came to be after the Costa Rican Institute of Electricity built a dam in the eastern part of the valley and is currently the largest lake in the whole of Costa Rica. Its home to two species of fish, the machaca and the rainbow bass, as well as various mammals such as jaguar and tapir along with 300 types of bird including hummingbirds, woodpeckers and toucans; a true nature lover's paradise. Take a hike to the lake, hire a bike and cycle round or even take advantage of a spot of horseriding to soak up the beautiful surroundings.
