Over the top decor but well located and brilliantly staffed.

London

Make no mistake. This is a full service hotel that is accomplished in all areas. You have very little to worry about. Book it. I have never been in a hotel where they change the carpets in every lift. Daily. With the day of the week integrated into the design. Crazy. But also. Curiously useful. The check in was smooth and while there were a legion of staff attending to each minute task. One to greet. One to open the door. One to guide to the desk. One to take the details and issue the key... it’s a well orchestrated dance. The rooms work well. Well sized. Full of all the right tech. A welcome lack of blinking lights. And a Stella view across the astonishing array of Skyscrapers that are the order of the day in HK and become even more astonishing at night. The pool is surprisingly big. And perfect temperature. The gym is well stocked. And the sauna and steam and jacuzzi all work their magic. A spontaneous neck and back massage also helped take the edge off a 13hr flight. The top floor shows you even more of those skyscrapers. And Petrus, their flagship eatery delivers polished dishes (at a price) — its a rather quiet affair. Equally discreet signs ask you to keep things down and to dress conservatively. Subsequently. It’s all rather lacking in the atmosphere department. Which is a shame as the food is world class. It’s a huge hotel. And it runs brilliantly. All the way to your room. The beds are simper comfy. High thread counts. The lot. It’s all in the overall theme. The Conrad next door is big and polished. The upper house is more of a ‘design’ hotel. And the FourSeasons does what it does everywhere: Modern lux. And over the water is The Peninsula. The old darling of the the family. But here... back at ShangriLa. there’s one bit that jars. The bathrooms are strangely old fashioned. They seem to be 10 years out of date. Which works in Paris or Rome... but in super high tech cities like HK it feels false. Out of place. I know everything here has been imported at great expense (endless Austrian chandeliers are EVERYWHERE) and the detail is impeccable. But there are parts of the show that could have been better performed by embracing modern technology and materials. The bathrooms are definitely in this camp. But. These are small issues in the bigger picture. This is a big. Polished. Smart place to stay that will very likely deliver to your every demand. And if you like chandeliers you’ll love it. Just don’t expect a bathroom from this decade.

Great stay, wonderful staff

London, United Kingdom

Lovely stay at the Island Shangri-La in a Peak view room. Room was large for HK, well-equipped with large bathroom, good in-room refreshments with Nespresso machine, comfortable bed, great working desk and huge windows with great views. Staff experience generally good - fantastic in areas (Cafe Too, housekeeping and guest relations - Juna in particular was brilliant!), but occasionally lacklustre (Lobby Lounge staff). As a business traveller, would have appreciated a heads-up that it can be challenging to get taxis from the hotel in rush hour to Central - it's easily accessible by foot / MTR, but being prewarned would have been helpful. Great fitness suite with fantastic and attentive staff. Will be back!
