Valparaiso - Chile

Valparaiso is Chile’s second largest city, and unlike the capital, Santiago, is located on the Pacific Coast. In the 19th Century Valapariso was used as a stopover point for sailors travelling between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans and became known as ‘little San Francisco’, the similarities are certainly striking; the colourful architecture and hilly topography closely mirror its American counterpart.
It’s no surprise that one of Valparaiso’s key attractions requires a spot of climbing; Artist Pablo Neruda’s house sits atop a hill in La Sebastiana, this is open to the public who can climb the several floors for breathtaking views over the harbour. For equally great views at a less strenuous price, Ascensor Concepcion is the city’s oldest elevator, which originally ran on steam power when it was built in 1883.
