Calama Holidays

Set amid the splendid archaeological surroundings of Chile's Atacama Desert, we love holidays in Calama for their stark evidence of the pre-Hispanic era. Hire a 4x4 or take a taxi to see the ruins of Chiu-Chiu, the chullpas of Topáter (pre-Columbian cemeteries), the caves of Yalquincha, or the remains of the copper mines at Chuquicamata. The wild and barren landscape around Calama, one of the driest cities in the world, provides a unique look at these ancient remains.

This unique museum exhibits a permanent display of the Andean people of Calama from before the Spanish conquerors arrived, reflecting their historical and cultural development. The exhibits show tools that the indigenous people used for hunting as well as arts and crafts made from volcanic rocks, copper, jerseys, ceramics, and even cacti. The exhibits also show pieces used by the Tiawanaku and Inca culture and how these pieces changed after the Spanish arrived.
