Overall a pretty good stay

Niagara Falls, Canada

My wife and I have been to Hunstville several times but this was the first time we stayed at Deerhurst. We did so to take advantage of the winter activities as we normally go in the summer. We were lucky that it had snowed prior to us getting there as well as a fair amount on the Saturday. Check in was a breeze. I think it took less than five minutes, I'm sure of it. We were put in LODGE 52 which was nice to be away from the main building but on the snowy day it was a bit of a hassle to get to the main building for dinner. It's not a far walk at all just would be nice if there was a tunnel but I can see why there isn't. The room looks exactly how it does on the website except it's missing the knick knacks from the picture which made it look more homey. It was clean and the kitchenette has everything you would need to cook for yourself, including a dishwasher. The one negative about the room is that the bedroom doesn't have a source of heat so the main area needs to be cranked up to get heat into the bedroom. We had drinks and a snack in the pub on two occasions and service was pretty good and beer was cold. There are firepits outside on the deck but were lit on the one day. Should be a fire going all the time. Speaking of firepits, I noticed that there aren't any along the ski paths or snowshoe paths. It wouldn't take much to have an employee taking wood out and restoking the fire every now and again. Food at Compass was pretty good. Our appetizer arrived fairly late after being seated but was taken off the bill. Thank you. We sat at the bar and enjoyed some drinks and the nightly entertainment. As far as the sporting equipment goes. The snowshoes were good except there is no clear signage as where to go so we just walked down to the big Muskoka chair and back. We got skates to go to Arrowhead for skating and as soon as we got on the ice quickly realized that were useless. No edge whatsoever. I could easily put a great deal of pressure on the edge and run it along with my finger and not fear being cut. We could barely stand on the ice let alone stop. We are skaters - me hockey and her, a figure skater. When we got back to Deerhurst to return the skates I told them about the dullness and they stated ya the sharpening machine has been broken for quite some time and haven't been sharpened since. THIS REALLY NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. Overall we had a good experience and I think we will definitely go back - during the winter anyway.

With working husband

Toronto, Canada

My husband works for a company that made a three days retreat at this place and me and our two daughters (13 and 7 yo) accompanied him. This place is overall very good, with a few slips. Starting with the great: 1) The food! OMG the food. Everything was excellent. From the breakfast to the final formal dinner all meals were balanced, rich and interesting. 2) The views and the space: The place is absolutely beautiful covered in snow. 3) The staff: everyone was always helpful and friendly. The good: 1) the heated pool is colder than I expected, but after 20 minutes in the hot spa it was good. The could be better: 1) Some parts of it need minor fixes. The women’s changing rooms in the pool smells of mildew. The fat bikes are only for adults and some need serious maintenance (the chain on mine was loose and it was rusted). 2) because we did not have lots of snow on the week before, We could not go ice skating in the lake (even though many locals told us we could). Also Skiing was not available. That was disappointing. I thought they should arrange to have some small ice rink or activities so the kids would have more free options than just walking on the snow or the pool. All the other options were paid. For three days we felt a lack of options and ended up watching tv in our room. 3) there is NO room service or contents in the minibar. And the kitchen closes at 11 pm. So, at 11:30 when my kids (who had dinner at 5:30) asked for food I had NO options. Luckily, I could ask for a second dessert at the formal dinner my husband was attending and took it to my room. But being able to buy a sandwich or omelettes at any time would be nice.
