To be avoided

Like most, I was taken in with the reviews and the PR on this place. It costs a fortune so rather foolishly I thought it was indeed an upmarket place to stay. Oh how we laugh.. My room was very basic and very dated. I went to the bar and it looked and felt like a pub you'd find in a 70's logging town. And then we dined.. Unbelievably expensive the menu in the restaurant wouldn't be out of place in the West End. However, what was presented to us was truly awful. A cheap cut of steak and some veg - that oily smell you get with bad meat still lingers in my mind. After a few beers I began to ask a few questions with the bar staff. Unsurprisingly they are badly paid , poorly treated and their contempt for the place palpable. Ask a few questions on Quadra Island and you'll hear the same. Their website offers Shang Rila . Don't believe the hype..

Lovely place to stay

Melbourne, Australia

We had a two night stay here, to include a trip to go to see grizzly bears. Our room was in the main lodge with a superb view over Discovery Passage from a large balcony. The room had steps down to the sleeping area with a couple of chairs, wardrobe, desk and fridge upstairs. The bathroom was on the small side, but clean. Joe in Guest Services was fantastic, he couldn't do enough for us and was helpful to the extreme. This was much appreciated. Breakfast is available in the Legends restaurant and consists of choices from the buffet or the menu. The food was very good. However, the staff, even though they were friendly and helpful to the guests, seemed to be rather stressed and disorganised. It was difficult to find a clean table when you first went in. We also had dinner in the restaurant on one night. The food was 'nice' but not excellent and desserts were quite disappointing. The resort itself is quite a way from the town and there is not too much to do, but we had a good time there and would do a return visit - for a short time!
