Not the best in Banff

Cambridge, United Kingdom

I have stayed in four different hotels in Banff now so am well placed to make a comparison. Sorry, but so far this is bottom of my list. Pluses - (i) Nice and under used sauna and whirlpool in the basement (plus a few weights but not sufficient to be called a gym, and unable to find the lockers mentioned). (ii) On site parking ($5 per day). (iii) Right in the town centre. (iv) Breakfast included (with our package). Minuses - (i) Really limited breakfast. (Self-service cereal, porridge, toast, hard-boiled eggs & pastries. No meat. No maple syrup!) . What there is is good, so Ok for a one or two night stay but by the end of the week we opted to pay twice and go to one of the nearby cafés instead. Guests expected to place their used plates in a washing up bowl before leaving, which is not exactly classy. (ii) The 'breakfast nook' is actually a cramped room in the basement. (iii) Surprisingly unfriendly staff, especially given Canadians are known for their warmth. There are notices everywhere telling you what not do do. We were told off like children for wearing ski-boots on the stairs, even though it is fine to wear them everywhere else in the hotel. At check-in we were told we might be kicked out of the hotel if we made too much noise. What a way to welcome guests! (iv) The boot room/drying room is in the car park and seems to be unheated. Not worth using. (v) The plumbing makes lots of noise and woke us up with the first guest every morning. Other comments - (i) Room furnishings rather old fashioned, but this is not unusual for traditional Banff. (ii) No restaurant but plenty of other places to eat nearby. (iii) Free coffee available in the lobby some mornings (but strangely not every morning). A nice idea but most other Banff hotels offer free coffee in the late afternoon when people are returning in from the cold.

Good location, comfortable and clean

Belfast, United Kingdom

We stayed her for 11 nights as a family of 4, 3 adults and one teenager. The standard room was comfortable with 2 king sized beds but it was little too small for such a long trip and there was no where near enough storage space. However the room was serviced every day so it was really clean, the breakfast provided a good variety, porridge cereal, fruit, yoghurt, hard boiled eggs and pastries. The breakfast nook was in a really strange part of the hotel but we found a few shortcuts eventually. Reception staff were very helpful and friendly. I would stay again but would book a bigger room.
