Sleeping in history

Uberaba, MG

The grand dame of Phnom Penh is a very beautiful colonial building centrally located, walking distance from the river promenade and a few minutes tuk tuk ride from the Royal Palace. The swimming pools are really inviting after sightseeing in the heat of Cambodia. I really enjoyed my experience at the Raffles and would certainly recommend it.

Grand old lady of Phnom Penh

Edinburgh, Scotland

We stayed here for 8 nights' holiday as part of the Amex FHR scheme. Slightly odd, perhaps, to have chosen Phnom Penh as a holiday destination, but it does have its hidden attractions! The hotel provided a haven in amongst the noise, bustle, and pollution of the city. As part of the deal, we were upgraded to a State Room. It was comfortable (especially the bed) but a bit gloomy, and the bathroom needed some attention (basin plug didn't work, and the shower door didn't close fully) but these are things which I am sure will be renovated or improved in time. Breakfast at Cafe Monivong was extensive and delightful, - the evening meal there less good and lacking atmosphere because the lighting was rather industrial. The wine was also extremely expensive. There is potential to make this a really great evening eatery. The famous Elephant Bar deserves its fame: attentive service and a good range of cocktails and light food. The real star of the show was the pool area. Again, it needs a bit of attention (the concrete around the pool needs to be refreshed, the bright orange towels look out-of-place and garish, and the light fixtures in the pool itself seemed to come adrift occasionally), but it is an oasis of calm with friendly staff. Actually, all of the staff in this hotel, especially at Cafe Monivong int he mornings, were extremely friendly. In short, there were lots of good things about this hotel, and it still retains its old-world charm while trying to be modern, which takes some doing.
