An Idyllic Destination

London, United Kingdom

Song Saa has been on our must visit destinations for some time, and this year we decided to go to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. The website portrays an idyllic destination, so we were very excited to be finally making the trip. Having left the Sihanoukville port with a glass of Prosecco in hand, calm seas, we knew that this was going to be amazing. On approach to Song Saa the Vista Restaurant is the first thing you see - an overwater restaurant with amazing views of the ocean and a great location for sipping a cocktail as you watch the sunset. A great asset for the resort. We stayed in an ocean view villa, which was a great choice - a nice sized pool, with a daybed, two sun loungers a table and chairs along with some golden sand. The room was well equipped - the only negative was that only one of the hand basins had a soap dish with soap - not a big missing, but an attention to detail that shouldn’t have been missed. We opted for the all inclusive package, which provided all meals and a comprehensive list of soft and alcoholic drinks being included. The drinks list also included Prosecco so that was a big tick. However, the dining experience was extremely disappointing. The best meal of the day was breakfast, where there was a good choice including healthy options. Our first night we ate at the Vista dining which was really nice. Sitting on the waters edge provided a unique and special experience. We stayed four nights and were offered ‘destination dining’ on three of these night. We understood this to be compulsory and not optional. It may seem a bit harsh, but we did not enjoy any of our ‘destination dining’ experiences. There was not enough lighting to read the menu, see what you were eating and the food was cold. The food and dining experience at Song Saa was a huge disappointment and in some ways spoiled the overall experience. We did question ourselves on whether our expectations were unrealistic, but you need to remember how much you are paying to enjoy Song Saa, so there should be no disappointments! As part of the all inclusive package, we were provided the option of either a foot massage or a neck and shoulder massage, which was a great introduction to what the spa has to offer. The only point I would make is that when hot water is topped up into the foot bowl, maybe use something other than a kettle - a resort like Song Saa should demonstrate a little more finesse. We made use of the spa facilities by returning for a 90 minute massage, which was very relaxing. One point to consider is to extend the spa playlist to more than two songs as it’s a bit repetitive. One area where I do believe that a big improvement could be made is the spa reception/waiting area. This needs a complete re-think, it is not inviting nor does it portray a wellbeing, calming environment. Overall, we enjoyed our stay at Song Saa due to us getting a amazing deal of stay 4 pay 2. We would have been extremely disappointed if we had paid the full rate for our 4 night stay. This should have been amazing but unfortunately the food and dining experience were really disappointing and at somewhere like Song Saa there should be nothing that disappoints - it should be a destination that you never want to leave, as it is a truly unique destination.

Absolutely incredible location, very poor service

San Francisco, California

We left very conflicted about Song Saa. I wouldn’t stay there again, but it was one of the most beautiful locations I’ve ever been. We stayed in a villa with a pool and an ocean view. The view was stunning. The facilities were also terrific — the villa was huge and comfortable and the pool and day bed were lovely. The island is a real tropical paradise... there’s clear blue water, white sand, lots of fish in the water, and an adjacent island for hiking in the jungle. We made good use of the snorkeling equipment and kayaks made available. The sunsets are spectacular. All that was fantastic. Unfortunately, the service was subpar. We only saw our main “butler” when we arrived and briefly the next day. We filled out a form beforehand of activities we were excited about, but this was all ignored and we had to repeat it for him when we arrived. We told him the activities we were looking to book, and 7 hours later were informed that by the time he got around to booking them, they were already full. There was a large group of the hotel’s investors staying there at the same time, so perhaps management was distracted with them. Either way, it was disappointing to not get those activities that we had requested in the forms sent in advance, and that there was such a delay when we re-requested them once we arrived. One activity we booked was pretty cool: the bioluminescence tour. You just kind of splash around and see the lights under water, and it’s cool. It’s fun to be swimming at night under the starts too. The other activity we did end up booking was a waste of time and money. We arranged for the sunset cruise which was supposed to be on a fishing boat and a slow tour around. Instead, they put us on a speedboat, we raced to the location, and then raced back once the sunset. It was pretty weird. Even weirder was one of the staff members sat down with us and chatted the whole time. He was great and, if not on a sunset cruise with my wife, I would love to hang out with him. It was a weird way to spend a romantic evening, one hour, and a few hundred bucks though. I also got food poisoning / traveler’s sickness while here. That was miserable. I know this stuff happens when you travel to new places, but it was a little surprising for it to happen at this fancy resort. There was also just poor housecleaning service. They never swept the sand in our room, left dirty towels around, didn’t clean up coffee that spilled from the French press (a single-serving French press is not a great idea for a hotel room... at least make it a double-serving for two people), the water jug in front for feet washing was empty, they put dirty clothes in with clean clothes, rang the doorbell when the do not disturb sign was up, and just lots of weird little things. The handbook makes a big point of tourism being new there and to expect hiccups — which would be fine — but these all reflected a general lack of training and care from management, not some sort of cultural difference. Other hotels we stayed at in just as rustic places in Cambodia had none of these problems. For the price, I just expected more from Song Saa. The setting and facilities are wonderful... the management seems to lack an attention to detail or understanding of running a hotel of this caliber. There are examples throughout Cambodia that they might look to for inspiration.
