Peaceful oasis by the sea

Beverley, United Kingdom

We stayed for 3 nights in February 2020, Tuesday to Thursday and the hotel did not seem busy - it may have been busier at the weekends. The idea was to relax after our tour of Cambodia. It is very expensive by Cambodian standards, and we were not sure if we would like it. However, we loved it as soon as we checked into room 6, which is the upper floor sea facing room in the iconic blue villa. It is a lovely room, compact but stylish, with the most amazing balcony looking straight to the sea. It is in our view easily the best room in the hotel and we would not have enjoyed it so much staying in another room. Some of the newer rooms looked rather close together and would not have had such good views. All facilities were there, except one: no tea or coffee making facilities (even though every other hotel we stayed in had them) - this was annoying as a cup of tea on the balcony every morning would have been lovely. There was some kind of coffee and tea making facility in the resort library, but inconvenient and no milk anyway. The bed was comfortable, but there were some maintenance issues (dripping tap, despite it being reported by us on our arrival) and scuffed paintwork. Also the blinds are stylish but they let in light so you need to sleep with a face mask. Noise from the gardeners outside could often be heard in the early mornings. Turn down service with little sweets a nice surprise. The bin in the bathroom was not emptied for some reason. Our biggest annoyance was the wifi which was so-so in the room and even weaker on the balcony. We could use a phone but our iPad took ages to connect. A resort this good should have much better wifi. Wifi everywhere else we stayed was better. The resort itself is a scattering of 3 original 1960s French villas and some more modern ones, with a lovely thatched roofed breakfast and evening meal area. This was lovely and quiet, and overlooked the sea. The breakfast was beyond criticism - buffet and a la carte, quality food, good service. The best one we had on our entire trip and not to be rushed! The French pastries were outstanding but huge! There is an infinity pool and lovely lawns with shady spots for sitting and relaxing. No beach, but that didn't bother us in the slightest. You could swim in the sea from the nearby sailing club jetty if you wanted. The staff were very pleasant but training was not up to top notch standards - pool or garden service was non existent, you had to go and find someone for a drink. In the evening we went to the adjacent sailing club (owned by the hotel) for sundowner cocktails - they were good, and great value during the Mon to Thursday happy hour ($3). We ate there twice, largely as it had a good atmosphere and was reminiscent of the Caribbean with a wooden structure overlooking the sea. The food there was reasonable and good value for such a lovely setting - service could be a bit variable and the staff’s English and training could be better (e.g. producing a bottle of beer but not taking the empty one away). We would have eaten in the Strand restaurant in the resort, but it always looked empty and we did not like the long bench set up as we prefer individual tables. The resort is only 5 mins easy walk to the crab market, where there are some surprisingly good restaurants and cafes. We ate at Holy Crab which was very good, with very good service, and had a coffee at the Arts Cafe. Kep itself is quiet and sleepy (by Cambodian standards) with not a lot there, but the hotel does provide excursions if you feel the need. We went to Bo Tree Pepper Farm and Kampot which was an interesting morning out and recommended if you can tear yourself away from the peaceful resort. Overall, the place is expensive and far from perfect. That said, it is a wonderful way to relax in what can be a very noisy and chaotic country. It was just what we needed and we were sad to leave. We would come again but only if we could guarantee getting room 6! Come now while Kep and Kampot are so charming - unfortunately with all the building works going on in Cambodia it may not last.

Great space to relax, enjoy yummy food and great sunsets.

Our entire stay at the hotel was superb. Our room was extremely comfortable, with an excellent shower and bathroom, comfy bed and working a/c unit. The pool area and hotel grounds are well-kept and beautiful. The staff are very professional and welcoming. The food at the Strand restaurant and the Sailing club was very tasty and offered a diverse selection. The breakfast was also superb, the pastries were especially good. One night we opted for the five-course tasting menu which was like something out of a film as we watched the sunset from the roof of the hotel which was laid out just for us. The only difficulty was bringing ourselves to venture out of the hotel as it was so so comfortable and relaxing.
