Praia do Forte Holidays

Grab a coconut with a straw in it and head to the beach at Praia do Forte to see the most spectacular sunset in Brazil. As monkeys peek at you from the trees, watch the sun set and the full moon rise, turning the waters of the Rio Timeantube red. We love filling our holiday in Praia do Forte with sunset walks and night time hikes along the beach, watching for baby sea turtles on a frenzied dash for the sea or seeing them laying their eggs in the powdery sand.

  • Garcia D'Avila Castle

This Atlantic Forest reserve is located just a few miles from Praia do Forte and offers an array of eco-activities within the tropical forest. There are seven walks to explore by hiking, bicycling, or horseback riding, or for the more adventurous of spirit there is a zip line to experience. Biologist guides are available and teach you about the fauna and flora you will find in the forest.

  • Projeto Tamar

The impressive ruins of Garcia D'Avila Castle stand on top of a hill overlooking a palm tree-lined ocean. The castelo (also called Casa da Torre) was the first Portuguese-style building built in Brazil in 1552. Take a taxi or walk the four miles from town to explore the ruins and see the magnificent ocean views.

  • Esplanade

This non-government organisation protects the sea turtles along Brazil's coast, and their base in Praia do Forte is just one of 22 they manage. In the visitor's area you will see pools with turtles and other sea animals. Between July and September you can watch the staff release newly-hatched turtles into the sea.

  • Beach

Several years ago the dirt road running through Praia do Forte was paved, pedestrianised, and commercialised. Now this tree-lined street is dotted with colourful Bahian-style shops, restaurants, and street vendors where you can buy fresh fruit juice or coconuts. Wander the esplanade past the charming boutiques to a tiny church and a stunning, white sand beach.
