You could easily spend a whole day at this former royal retreat on the shores of glittering Kunming Lake. Once used by the imperial court to escape the city heat, the beautiful landscaped palace grounds include temples, gardens, pavilions, lakes, gate-towers, ornamental bridges, and a marble boat that was once a teahouse. Go for a stroll along the West Causeway for gorgeous views of exquisite bridges and boathouses.

The largest and best-preserved royal park in China, the Summer Palace was originally constructed as a luxurious royal garden, but later became the main residence of the Qing Dynasty. Today it is included on the UNESCO World Heritage list as a stunning example of Chinese landscape and garden design.
