Home to the emperors for over 500 years, this gargantuan UNESCO World Heritage site is a network of 980 buildings encircled by a moat over 50 metres wide. The many halls, pavilions, courtyards and gardens of this 15th century walled complex now house a huge collection of artwork and artefacts from the Ming and Qing dynasties, including paintings, pottery, bronzes, and jewellery.

The Forbidden City is one of China's three ancient palaces and is the most popular tourist attraction in the country with 9,999 rooms and chambers for you to discover. It is twice the size of the Vatican and three times the size of the Kremlin at 720,000 square metres. The best times to visit are spring and autumn when the weather is at its most pleasant.
