Great Resort, but some serious issues

Grant-Valkaria, Florida

We are repeat Sandals customers and generally very satisfied. However, the diving operation at this resort is absolutely below average, which is the reason why we must give this resort only three stars. First the pros: As you would expect with Sandals, the resort and the staff, as well as the food and service are excellent, no issues at all. Cons: We come to Sandals primarily to dive and were extremely disappointed in the entire diving operation. 1. The shuttle that brings you from the resort to the marina is in very bad shape inside and out. It is surprising that Sandals would allow this kind of thing to happen, since the SUV (shuttle) bears the Sandals logo. This vehicle is just a mess, it is dirty and the interior is broken in many places and the tires dangerously underinflated. 2. The dive shop is in such disorder and dirty that one does not even want go inside. The carpets are filthy, the equipment (BCD's and other stuff) is just thrown everywhere without any regard. 3. The boat is in bad shape. I think this vessel was never cleaned - neither the hull, nor the windows or the interior. All shackles are rusted, plastic waste everywhere on the boat. 4. The biggest disappointment was that in one week, the dives were cancelled on two days. We come to Sandals primarily to dive, so one can imagine our disappointment. On both days it was a little cloudy and windy, certainly diveable conditions. Any other diving operation on the planet would have gone out with their customers. We never had dives cancelled at any Sandals location, even with conditions that were far worse. We are experienced divers and well aware that in certain situations and conditions, dives need to be cancelled; but on both days the conditions were absolutely fine. Needless to say that we brought up our disappointment with the manager, who was sympathetic, but - as expected - told us that the safety of their customers comes first. No problem, we totally understand that, but as I said before, the weather conditions were good - cloudy with winds around 15 mph, gusting to maybe 20, very few white caps on the water and waves well below a maximum of two feet. The decision to cancel the dives was made by the water sports manager. Reading other reviews on the topic of diving at this resort revealed, that this did not happen the first time. It is unfortunate that our Sandals experience here was not as satisfying as it is usually. I hope that this situation will be remedied in the future.
