Good place, some limitations

Vashon Island

A good place with some issues. First, it is VERY isolated. If you go there you will be eating there, pretty much doing everything there. There is a village about a mile and a half away that has a couple of small grocery stores, one restaurant and a liquor store. The resort will give you a ride in, no problem. It is also $70 taxi ride from the airport. As the reviewer just before me said, they need to fix some of their activities. My wife wanted to fish off the shore and they didn’t have any gear, it was lost in the hurricane a year and a half ago. Two hundred bucks at the local store would have fixed that OBB Resort. Go spend it. The kayaks were a ragtag bunch but usable, the bikes pretty funky but ridable (barely). OK, now the good. Our room, for the price, was huge. Walkout to the beach, private deck, full kitchen, large bath, furniture just fine. It had a few rough spots but this place, off season, is moderately priced. We had booked it for the entire stay in the Bahamas but decided to head to town for more stuff to do after four days. They were fine with it, accommodating. The place we are in now took all payment in advance, not changeable. Everyone who works there was more than polite, we were walking into town and a guy I had seen around stopped his pickup to offer a ride. Another guy took us to the grocery store and liquor store, even recommended and showed me the preferred local beer. They arranged for their resort van to take us to the next place we were staying. Absolutely accommodating in every way. Housekeeping whenever you wanted it. Now for the other information. Grand Bahama is in trouble. Abandoned hotels and resorts are everywhere in Freeport with the accompanying unemployment. It is pretty sad. We did this totally spur of the moment without any research. Also, call. Don’t book online. We paid nearly $100 a night under the advertised room rate. That happened where we are now, too.

Very disappointed, liars liars!

This is a warning for anyone looking to spend time away at a luxury resort in Grand Bahama. I made a terrible mistake by not only choosing this resort but Grand Bahama Island in general. There is nothing luxury about any of those. I emailed this resort 3 times prior to arriving asking about fishing excursions, etc. that my son (12) and I could take part in. They never responded to any email, this should have been a huge red flag but I didn't think much about it, my mistake. We arrived to notice that the resort is very run down and not well taken care of. The activities they mention on their website for families are a joke... shuffleboard is horrible, broken, etc; kayaks and paddle boards are older than the island itself, they had now fishing equipment to offer: no beach volleyball and the pool is no bigger than the one in back yard. The food is mediocre at best. Here is the capper... I made a DEEP SEA fishing excursion for the next morning and they promised me a brand new 32 foot boat with twin 250's and I got a 16 foot single 125 engine. There was no bench to sit on because it was ripped out thus we had to sit on an igloo cooler. I could have stopped right there and not continued but I did not want to disappoint my son. We did not go DEEP SEA as this boat was not capable of much of anything. The captain was not that much more capable. We caught a few fish, but not much to write home about. They tried to charge me full price ($450) for this trip but I did not pay. I gave the captain $100 and made sure the resort didn't get a penny. Needless to say we were very unhappy and left later that night and went to a different resort in Freeport. The only good thing I have to say is that the GM understood my issues and truly apologized and allowed me to cancel without penalty. I cannot believe people give this place such good reviews, I guess if you own a boat this may be a nice place to anchor but other than that, be very wary of what you are getting into. Finally, know that you are 36 miles, an $80 one way taxi trip to Freeport, there is nothing between you and there, crazy. Again, if you have about, maybe this is a good place, but other than that, good luck!
