Very relaxing with beautiful views

Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom

Arriving at hotel the view from the hillside is beautiful showing the hotel in all its glory. We checked in with the Concierge, Patrick who showed us to our Royal Suite (room 205) and immediately destressed as the view from this room was just lovely. We overlooked the dock and pier with views across the bay and Mamora Beach to the right. The suite was large with a lounge area, small kitchen, bedroom space (with huge, comfortable bed) and a large bathroom with his and her sinks, a large bath and two showers. There were two bottles of water upon arrival and tea and coffe provided with a kettle and coffee maker. There was also an ice bucket two mugs and spoons. We filled our bottles everyday from the bar to keep us going. There was a hairdryer in the bathroom and an iron and board in the closet d a safe. There was a large screen TV and DVD player and a clock radio with docking station. The room had two ceiling fans and an air con unit to keep us cool. There was also a fan on the balcony. The room was cleaned to an adequate standard throughout our 14 night stay with plenty of fresh linen and towels if required. Even though we're were beside the dock, the staff preparing the boats did not bother us and we were up most mornings before they started. The only noise we heard was when the "fogging"was done at 5am but we easily went back to sleep. This was much preferable to having mosquitoes and sand flies. We had breakfast in the Rainbow Garden every day and found plenty of choice. The food was covered (although if you get up from the table, cover your glass with your serviette as the birds will try to drink it). Staff here were all lovely. We ate here a few nights and found it to have good choices and good service. We skipped lunch everyday and ate in all the other restaurants during our stay. We liked the Docksider. There was plenty of choice and it was buffet style so you could have as much as you wanted. Staff here were busy but friendly. We went to Cocos early in the holiday and although the food was nice, the service was really, really slow and the staff seemed as if they didn't want to be there so we didn't go back. We did go to 11 - 11 once as we just fancied a snack type meal and it was ok. We went to Piccolo Mondo one night and the food choice and standard was very good. The view was amazing but we were there before it got dark so you could see the whole bay before your eyes. We paid $75 US for this and do feel that AI guests should have one visit included if staying for more than one week. We would certainly have revisited if this had been the case. Drinks service at all restaurants/bars was very good. Our favourites were Rushell, Justin and Derrick at the Royal Suites bar. During the day they would also come around with fruit and snacks which kept us going until our evening meal (the cakes and cookies were VERY nice). The quality of the spirits was good but the wine (red and white) wasn't to our taste. The champagne was ok. The cocktails were extremely tasty!! The entertainment was mixed - we enjoyed the steel band and the lady singer but some of the others were not of the same standard. We only used the beach grill on our last day and would not recommend this because the service was appalling, with no direction regarding ordering your food. The staff are happy just to stand and look at you until you ask for something and then it seems like it is an effort to serve you. There are basic drinks here - no cocktails available and the whole set up seemed disorganised. We are not beach goers but did walk around the whole site throughout our stay and wandered along Mamora Beach and Coco beach. Mamora is massive and was so clean. This is where the water sports are based because it is the tranquil side. The water looked clear but there were the usual fish and seaweed (not much)one would expect in a natural bay. Coco beach was experiencing the problem with the naturally occurring seaweed so we did not spend time there. The staff were working very hard to clear this and cannot believe people complained. We prefer to stay by a pool and on this holiday used the Royal Suites Adult pool the entire time. Some days we had this to ourselves which was quite nice. There are no children allowed. The beds were clean and comfortable. You could change towels any time and as often as you wished. There were plenty of extra chairs and tables and several parasols/shades. The Royal Suites bar was close enough to get drinks from (and as previously mentioned, the staff would come around for drink orders as well as bringing snacks). The pool was smaller than the others but was lovely and warm. The other waterfall pool was much colder getting in to but still very pleasant. One day the filter wasn't working and the water was cloudy but this was addressed as soon as we reported it and then checked every day for the rest of our stay. We did take afternoon tea twice which was pleasant although the two staff members were rather grumpy. The tea and coffee were available outside the Rainbow Garden all day. The grounds are pleasant and very clean with lots of areas to sit. There is a buggy service available if you don't wish to walk between areas. We walked around the whole site but didn't use the gym, spa or tennis facilities but they looked good. We did use the water sports which were fine. There is a shop in the lobby which sells clothing, food (biscuits, sweets and other snacks), alcohol and soft drinks, ices, toiletries, souvenirs and healthcare products. We found items to be expensive but then again, there is nowhere else nearby to purchase items. Overall, we loved our vacation and very rarely return to the same hotel as the world is such a big place but would certainly think about revisiting St James. The staff on the whole were very nice and our shout outs and thanks go to: Royal Suites pool/bar - Rushell (who is a major asset), Justin and Derrick, Sandrya Royal Suite Concierge - Patrick and Ralph. Nothing was a bother and they looked after us well. Docksider bar - Inez Docksider restaurant - Trevoyn, Justin, Jason, Rainbow Garden - Phyliss, Pearl and many others We hope the owner is recovering from his accident and thank everyone for a lovely stay.

Lovely week at St James

Chester, United Kingdom

We have just returned after a wonderful relaxing week at St James Club. We holidayed with our 4 year old and we just wanted to do literally nothing for the week. The setting of the hotel is idyllic, it definitely has the wow factor as you drive up to it. Our room was like most others - clean but basic and in need up an update as they were tired looking. However 3 steps off our balcany and you were on the beach, we’ve never quite had such an amazing located hotel room ever! If you are looking for a Cancun style of All Inclusive hustle and bustle then this isnt the place for you. Its all about unwinding and relaxing and enjoying a quieter stay. Antigua is the most uncommercialised of the Carribean islands. This hotel made it the perfect family hotel for us as our daughter was in bed early each night (the wide choice of cable tv in the room really helped with our early nights!). The only feedback I would like to offer is that there isnt a mini bar in the room, we werent there to drink it dry but having a young child who often wants water etc it would have been good to have had some regular water and a few soft drinks in the fridge. The hotel claim this is not part of their green environmental policy yet have things like paper towels in public restrooms rather than hand dryers so didnt quite make sense on that policy. There is a well stocked shop near reception to purchase snacks and soft drinks but this is quite expensive. We found the food to be excellent and drinks were fantastic too (love a cocktail or two!) the staff were also really friendly and helped to make a memorable stay. One tip is to take either some local currency or USD for some tips for staff as there is no ATM in the hotel. The nearest is in English Harbour which is about a $35-40 round trip. The hotel also will not give a cash advance. It would have been good if the hotel had one. Our beach had a terrible seaweed problem and want to give full credit to the guys who worked tirelessly every single day to remove this. Each day we became more and more relaxed here and now feel fully recharged. All in all we had a great time and definitely would return to the beautiful island of Antigua.
