Family Vacation Review from a Tropical Paradise!

We just spent this past week having an amazing family vacation in a tropical paradise! This was our first visit to Curtain Bluff. We traveled with our 2 boys, 11 and 13. After going to other all-inclusive resorts, we were looking for a smaller family all-inclusive resort with incredible beaches and water and other excellent amenities. We found there are not a lot of luxury all-inclusive resorts, but Curtain Bluff was recommended immediately as the first option by two travel agents. We also looked through many Trip Advisor reviews of Curtain Bluff and other resorts and you will see incredible reviews. A lot are from couples who have been coming for years, and from some families. When I say years, I mean you have couples returning for 5, 10, 20+ years who even know the owner and staff who equally have been working at Curtain Bluff for so many years. We didn’t see a lot of reviews from families with younger teens, so I hope this review answers some of your questions for those looking to travel to Curtain Bluff with teenagers. Arrival and Rooms: The resort is only about 30 minutes from the airport. I recommend arranging transportation through the resort. They transport guests to and from all day. When you arrive at airport, they whisk you through all the immigration areas quickly and soon you are traveling to the resort. The check in process is very quick. All rooms face the “other” beach (rough water but beautiful). We were on a second floor and view was incredible. Thought about having beach level rooms but they are less private. We chose connecting rooms. Rooms were nice, clean and offered the layout we needed. They are not fancy, and don’t have some of the amenities you may have had at other high-end resorts. You don’t spend a lot of time in the room, so it isn’t an issue. I would recommend having a much larger selection of snacks available in the rooms. Beach: Most guests spend their time during the day on the calm beach by the bay which is incredible and has the turquoise water you imagine and see in the photos. All the boating activities and kids’ activities are located here. The Sea Grape restaurant located on this beach offers a daily lunch buffet. Occasionally beach staff come around with waters, frozen fruit bars, fruit, and cold towels. There isn’t other food service on the beach which they should consider offering. You can order a drink, but they come around very infrequently and most people head to the bar to get a drink. I will say that there were a few women staff in charge of placing towels on chairs who were incredibly unfriendly throughout our visit. In fact, it was the only negative experience with staff during the stay. I would like to give special mention to Carl and Wizz on the boating staff. Both very friendly and Carl brought my sons sailing or tubing almost daily. Always a smile and pleasant, and now at Curtain Bluff for his 29th year. Wizz brought us on some nice boat tours. Something to note for those who often inquire about how soft the sand is or whether there are rocks or seaweed. The sand is almost powder soft, but in many areas there is several feet of rocks entering the water and I wondered whether this was always like this. Once you get past this point it is mostly just sand with very few fish. The two ends of their section of the beach have fewer rocks at the entry and many enter in these areas. I didn’t see any seaweed but good to keep an eye on the Sargassum seaweed problem affecting many islands and beaches. Specifically, in Antigua the Northern part of the island from what I was told. It seems Curtain Bluff is protected by the current that leads further away from their bay. Daytime Activities: Since they started allowing children, they have been continuing to expand activities for children. This including a kid’s camp for very young kids, basketball and pickleball court, shuffleboard, bocce ball, ping pong, tennis, squash, and of course all the boating activities. Keep in mind all boating is included in the cost which is unusual for an all-inclusive resort. They offer sailing, kayaking, paddle boarding, paddle boats, water skiing, tubing, snorkeling and 2 snorkeling trips per day for an hour and a half. For those who like to fish they do not have fishing rods to use off their dock or other areas of the resort. There are private charters available and other private excursions you can book. Other resorts have a tour boat which would be a great addition to Curtain Bluff. During our stay there were several younger kids, and only a handful of teens. More likely because of the time of year and school vacations. Definitely some returning and new families with college aged kids. Both of my kids were hoping for more activity with other kids their age and especially in the evenings. There aren’t staff dedicated to engaging in activity with the kids that you may find elsewhere. You need to think about the amount of activity and interaction you hope for your kids to have during a vacation. I think the resort would benefit from a “teen” room that would offer a hangout space. There is a room with computers and an old Xbox and TV since they are not in rooms. We saw very few people in there. Spa: If you like spas this isn’t one to miss, especially the view from the waiting area. They often feature the photo taken from the hot tub overlooking the ocean. It is spectacular. Very nice small spa and great services. Food and Night Entertainment: The resort has two restaurants. The Sea Grape by the beach and the Tamarind Tree at the main building. All breakfast is at the Tamarind Tree and with a menu. Dinners are at either restaurant. The Tamarind Tree menu changes daily and the Sea Grape stays the same with daily specials. Reservations only need to be made a few days prior and you can reserve two days at a time. Both restaurants offer wonderful experiences with great food. The one special part about the Tamarind Tree is the live music every night. They feature local bands from Antigua. There is a dress code for dinner which everyone follows. At the Tamarind Tree men need to wear collared shirts and pants (no jeans). Women tend to wear dresses or nice pants. Young kids can wear nice shorts. At the Sea Grape men can wear nice shorts and collared shirts. You may think it’s annoying to have a dress code for dinner but it’s nice. So many of the staff at the restaurants have worked at the resort for many years. You get to know them quickly. Special mentions for Danny, Clive, and Javid **Important note with any children who have food allergies. Let the resort know in advance of the allergies. They will note it for every reservation and then you need to remind the waiters at each meal. They were very good about it all and checking with chefs about food. Conclusion: Curtain Bluff feels much more like a small club than a commercial resort. After a few days you sense the family feeling of it because of all the return visitors. By the time you leave you will feel part of their family as well. The owner, management and staff were incredibly gracious to my family and we thank them for being so welcoming. You will not find a higher quality all-inclusive resort between the service, food, beach, spa, and included activities. I would highly recommend you consider a visit to Curtain Bluff. My family and I will certainly visit again!

Amazing Hotel and staff, first class!!

Montreal, Canada

We stayed here for a week in November last year and had a great experience. Everything about this hotel is perfection. The ground floor room we had opened up directly onto the beach and we had breakfast on our terrace every morning. The service here is fantastic and the food is delicious. If you like a more upscale experience, ie: champagne on the beach, not having to fight for a beach chair, water sports at your finger tips...we snorkelled, took out Hobi Cats each day, water skied etc with no wait time. The hotel and grounds are beautiful and there are fantastic tennis courts, gym etc. If you want a relaxing all-inclusive escape with beautiful beaches and amazing staff this is your hotel. Try a BBC on the beach "Baileys, Banana and Coconut"...my favourite drink by far. We will return.
