Your Canada Heritage Trail self drive begins in Toronto, Ontario’s capital city. The city is where you’ll find a variety of incredible must-sees, including the CN Tower, which looms overhead at 553 metres tall. From there, you’ll travel to Kingston and uncover the many secrets of Fort Henry, originally built in 1812.

Take in the jaw-dropping views of the Thousand Islands region as you head to Montreal, the next big city on your itinerary. You’ll hop aboard a cruiser to get a closer look at the many natural and manmade wonders of the area, such as Zavikon Island, Boldt Castle and Millionaire’s Row. There will also be an entire day dedicated to exploring the best of Montreal, with the chance to visit Notre Dame Basilica and Mt. Royal Park.

Quebec City is up next. En route, enjoy a short stop off at Cap de la Madeleine, Canada's national shrine to the Virgin Mary, which is quaintly perched on the shore of St. Lawrence River. Soak up the rich French culture and heritage of the city and take the time to visit the many museums and historic landmarks for which it is so famous.

Ottawa, Canada’s capital, is another hot spot on the Heritage Trail. Here, you’ll head to Parliament Hill to marvel at its Gothic revival architecture, as well as the Rideau Canal for some blissful river views. Be sure to stop by the Bytown Museum for an educational look at Ottawa’s past. You’ll wind down in Huntsville; a placid, lake-filled hideaway celebrated for its wildlife. You might even spot a few rare creatures, such as the blue heron and the white tailed deer.

Your Heritage Trail journey concludes in the ‘honeymoon capital of the world’, Niagara Falls. Witness the cascading waterfalls in all of their glory before heading back to Toronto to catch your return flight and reflect upon your whirlwind trip.

Arrive in Toronto, the capital city of Ontario. You’ll land at Pearson International Airport before heading to your hotel and starting some early exploring at your leisure.

Toronto

The day is yours to dive into a bit more detail when it comes to uncovering Toronto’s prime attractions. There’s plenty to see and do, but be sure to set some time aside to see the CN Tower, which is 553 meters tall, and the tallest free-standing building on the continent. Glide up countless floors in the glass elevator on your way to the glass-floored viewing deck for jaw-dropping views of the city.

Toronto - Kingston

You’ll trade Toronto for Kingston as you pass through the quaint heritage towns of Prince Edward County. Once here, you’ll have the opportunity to tour Fort Henry, named after Henry Hamilton, former Lieutenant Governor of the Province of Quebec. The original fort was erected in 1812 and is now a designated National Historic Site of Canada.

Day 4

Kingston - Montreal

The journey continues as you gradually enter the famed Thousand Islands region, comprised of approximately 1,800 islands. The islands are surrounded by the St. Lawrence River, which straddles the border of the U.S. and Canada. There’s no need to marvel at the majesty of the view from afar. You’ll hop aboard a cruiser for a closer look. Along with the natural wonders, you’ll also cruise past Zavikon Island, Boldt Castle and Millionaire’s Row, which is dotted with stunning, luxurious cottages and estate homes. Your day concludes in Montreal, where you’ll be getting some rest and spending the night.

Montreal

Montreal is the second largest city in Canada, and it is now yours to explore. Spend the day scoping out its most sought-after sights. Notre Dame Basilica should be at the top of your list of priorities. It’s a beautiful historic church and is one of the most visited monuments in all of North America. Other must-sees of the city include the Biodome, the Olympic site where the Olympics were held in 1976 and Mt. Royal Park.

Montreal - Quebec City

Today, you will have the chance to explore it in its entirety. For an insight into the city’s history, make your way to Old Quebec. The area is home to numerous historic museums and landmarks, perfect for exploring.

Quebec City - Ottawa

You have the morning to conduct a few last-minute adventures in Quebec City. We highly recommend a visit to Dufferin Terrace, which is a beautiful Gothic building. Next, move onto Ottawa, Canada’s capital. Did you know? Ottawa gets its name from the Algonquin word ‘adawe’, which means ‘to trade’. Choose from a variety of roads from Quebec to Ottawa, based on what you’d most like to see en route.

The day is yours to explore the city of Ottawa at your leisure. Some top sights to add to your itinerary include Parliament Hill, home to the beautiful Gothic revival suite of Parliament Buildings. A trip to the National Gallery of Canada provides an insider’s look into the Canadian art scene. It boasts over 90,000 pieces by artists from around the globe, along with a variety of extra special artworks by indigenous Canadian artists. Round up your excursion with a visit to the Rideau Canal for some blissful river views and a host of other attractions, such as the Bytown Museum, which offers an educational look at Ottawa’s history, and the eight huge, manually operated Ottawa Locks.

Ottawa - Huntsville

Today, you depart from city life and embark on a journey into Mother Nature’s finest sights in Canada. You’ll drive west to Algonquin Provincial Park and the pristine Muskoka region, with Huntsville as your ultimate destination. Huntsville is the largest town in Ontario’s Muskoka region and is a placid, lake-filled hideaway celebrated for its wildlife. There are well over 1,000 lakes in the area, perfect for those wanting to explore. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for black bears, chipmunks, white tailed deer, and blue herons.

Huntsville

Soak up the tranquillity that comes hand in hand with a day spent in Huntsville or take your cue from the locals and get involved in the various fun-filled activities on offer. Work on your backhand with a friendly game of tennis, or head out onto the surface of the abundant waters on a pleasant boat cruise. Horseback riding is another great way to savour the natural wonders of the area. Many visitors choose to delve into the culture of the region with a visit to Muskoka Pioneer Village, which is known for its perfectly preserved historical buildings and chugging steam train.

Huntsville - Niagara Falls

The next stop is Niagara Falls, the ‘honeymoon capital of the world. On your way here, consider making a stop in Midland at Sainte Marie among the Hurons – a historic, recreated village demonstrating everyday life, and the arts and crafts of a traditional colonial village. From here you can venture past the plentiful orchards and vineyards of the Niagara growing region, stopping for a few hours to delight in a classic wine-tasting experience.

Day 13

Niagara Falls - Toronto

Spend your morning feeling the refreshing spray of the nearby waterfalls on your skin as you prepare to head back to Toronto and catch your return flight from Pearson International Airport. En route to the airport, you’ll have the opportunity to stop at the Welland Canal, a connection point and ship canal between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, before you bid farewell to Canada.
