Mumbai Sightseeing Tour
Today, there is an early morning (optional) tour – Mumbai by Dawn. Starting at the crack of dawn (5.30am), you’ll head to the chaotic docks to see the daily lives of the Koli fisherfolk.
You’ll watch the arrival and grading of around 25 tonnes of fish and witness the one-of-a-kind fish auction of the famous Bombay Duck. All the action takes place in the middle of the road, even down to the sorting of the international newspapers. The bustle of activity sees the workers sort and distribute more than 100 tonnes of meat, fruit, and vegetables to the various markets. The morning scene is a hive of activity: from the vibrant colours of the flower market and the setting up of the bazaars to the milkmen whizzing past, loaded up with their milk canisters.
Another highlight of the tour is walking through the green market. Here, you’ll find thousands of vendors selling green leafy vegetables atop a bridge. What’s mystical about this market is that in a couple of hours, the vendors will have completely packed up and gone.
The final stop on the morning tour is a walk across a cricket ground, where you’ll learn about the sport and how it has captured the heart of India.
Mumbai’s chaotic mornings are a great insight into the people of Mumbai, showing you the real spirit of this busy city and its people.
Returning to the hotel, the rest of the day is free for you to explore and take in the sights of Mumbai at your own leisure.
Today, you’ll enjoy an excursion to see the Elephanta Caves. You’ll take a launch (motorboat) from the Gateway of India in Mumbai across to Gharapuri or Elephanta Island.
The island was named by the Portuguese after the large stone elephant statue that originally stood near the shore. This stone carving can now be seen at the Jijamata Udyaan (Victoria Gardens) on the mainland. The caves are reached by a stairway up the hillside from the ferry landing. Dating back to the 5th and 8th century, you’ll discover the labyrinth of temple caves here. As one of the most important examples of rock carving in India, the seven rock-cut temples are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The main temple with its halls, courtyards, pillars and shrines has a number of large sculptures depicting the Hindu god of creation and destruction, Shiva. Its most impressive carving is the 6m tall three-faced statue of Shiva. After the excursion, you’ll return to the mainland and the rest of the day will be free for you to enjoy at your own leisure.
Today, a transfer will pick you up from your hotel and take you to Mumbai airport. Bidding farewell to India, you’ll board your flight home.
