Welcome to Madagascar and Antananarivo, the "City of a Thousand", referring to the 1,000 treasures to be found. You are collected and transferred to your hotel, The Relais des Plateaux.
Mandrare River Camp
After early breakfast transfer to the airport to take a flight to Fort Dauphin, where your local English speaking guide will meet you and drive you to Mandrare River Camp, about 4 hours away. Your entire stay will be all inclusive so you do not need to worry about anything.
Once settled into your tent, enjoy the majestic views over the river. After a barbeque lunch made of succulent grilled meats and salads, go for a walk in the Sacred Ifotaka community forests. The forests are home of the Antandroy tribe’s ancestral tombs, and are filled with a bewildering array of flora and fauna, unique to the spiny forest.
Back to the camp, after a shower and a freshen up, enjoy an evening aperitif on the river terrace, to be followed by a sumptuous 3-course dinner.
Mandrare River Camp
After breakfast, you will drive south to the Sacred Gallery forests. These deciduous forests mainly composed of tamarind trees are full of wildlife, especially lemurs, including large groups of Ringtailed.
In the afternoon, you head up to enjoy the sun setting among the baobabs and to watch the moon rising behind the mountains beyond - A magical experience.
In the evening the local villagers may come to perform some shows of traditional music and dancing.
Mandrare River Camp
Enjoy a succulent breakfast made of freshly baked croissants and “pains au chocolat”, fresh fruits, cereals and breads.
At one of the nearby markets, you will witness the full colours of valley life as people who have travelled for hours or even days, buy and sell their local wares. With your expert guides to interpret everything you see, you will have a rich fulfilling experience.
After lunch at the camp, you will set off northwards in the mid-afternoon to the Forest of Zenavo, owned by an elderly gentleman, which is a great place for night walks First, you will go for a walk during dusk to spot the Sifaka and the sleeping Whitefoot Sportive lemurs, then once the sun has set you will be able to see two mouse lemur species, sleeping birds, chameleons, owls and sportive lemurs.
Sainte Luce Reserve
After breakfast you will hit the road to Fort Dauphin and head towards Manafiafy. It is a beautiful place where the forest meets the turquoise sea, with huge yellow sand beaches. Behind the Camp, on one side is a huge mirror-like mangrove swamp and on the other, wetlands seething with amazing carnivorous plants that look like candelabra art.
Several activities are on offer, such as whale watching from June to October, canoeing on the swampy mangroves, sport fishing, speedboat excursions.
Sainte Luce Reserve
Today you will have the opportunity to take part in the excursions you missed yesterday, we highly recommend taking a guided walk through the rain forest where you will have the chance to see lemurs, chameleons and a wide variety of insects. Alternatively enjoy some down time relaxing on the beautiful palm fringed beaches.
Having experienced great adventures in the southern part of the Island, you are going to taste more beauty in the north. Enjoy a last trip on the bush track from Manafiafy to Fort Dauphin for about 3 hours, then overlook the entire southern part of the big island on a 2 hour flight back to Antananarivo.
Once at the capital, you will be transferred for an overnight to Relais des Plateaux.
After an early breakfast you will be transferred to the airport and fly to Anjajavy, a beautiful remote island. The hotel is a premium Relais and Chateaux property on the West Coast, north of Mahajanga, along the Mozambique Channel in a rich and exceptional environment which can be reached only by plane.
Discover the reserve with its lemurs and flora and visit local villages which perfectly reflect the Malagasy people’s diversity is an enriching experience. Enjoy the ultimate luxury and isolation in totally unspoilt nature at the finest hotel of the Red Island on a full board basis.
Apart from the sea and the nature, the place has also many free activities including catamaran sailing (accompanied), sea or mangrove Kayaking, windsurfing or just snorkelling. You can also swim in the pool or play beach volley, petanque and badminton plus go on walks and visit the local village and stroll in the forest (with or without guide), explore local caves or enjoy a night walk.
If not feeling active, a welcome beach waits you.
Today you will have time to enjoy this stunning lodge at leisure, you can spend your day soaking up the sun on the stunning beach or join one of the many excursions offered by the hotel. We recommend visiting the local villages, where you will be able to experience the Malagasy way of life.
Enjoy a last aerial view of the big Island on your way back to Antananarivo in time for your international flight.
