Rio de Janeiro
Today your adventure begins in earnest. At Cosme Velho Station you’ll board a cog train, which winds its way through the lush Tijuca Forest to the summit of Corcovado Mountain. Clambering up a short flight of stairs, you’ll find yourself face to face with the statue of Christ the Redeemer, Rio’s most iconic landmark. The view across the city to the azure blue sea is breath taking.
After descending we’ll take a cable car to Sugarloaf Mountain, another celebrated Rio de Janeiro lookout. Next, we’ll explore the shops and attractions of the downtown area, with lunch at Confeitaria Colombo. Opened in 1894, it’s one of the oldest in the city.
We’ll finish the afternoon at the Sambadrome, the site of the city’s legendary carnival, before returning to your hotel to spend the evening at your leisure.
Rio de Janeiro
Spend the day exploring the sights of the city at your own pace. The Candelária Church is a must visit, as is famous Ipanema Beach.
You also have several options for full and half day tours at extra cost. Visit the former colonial stronghold of Petrópolis, high up in the Serra dos Órgãos, where beautiful Portuguese architecture stands amid the encroaching jungle. You can also take a morning trip to Olympic Boulevard and the spectacular Museum of Tomorrow, which explores new ideas for sustainable living.
In the evening, the Rio by Night option showcases Rio’s carnival heritage through samba bands, costumes and dancing.
Rio de Janeiro – Iguazu
After breakfast we’ll transfer to the airport for your onward flight to Iguazu.
These astonishing waterfalls sit on the border of Brazil and Argentina, and today we’ll explore the Brazilian side. Stepping out into Devil’s Throat you’ll be assailed by the roar and thunder of the waters.
After exploring the hiking trails surrounding the falls, you’ll return to your hotel to relax by the pool.
This morning you’ll cross the Tancredo Neves bridge into Argentina, where you’ll explore the Iguazu National Park. The upper and lower trails each offer stunning views of the falls against the vibrant greens of the jungle.
The real highlight of the day is sure to be your trip on the jungle train to the top of Devil’s Throat. Here a catwalk tracking the edge of the falls enables you to feel the waters as they tumble into the depths below.
Iguazu – Manaus
Depending on your flight time, you may have the option to take an optional tour of Iguazu’s famous Bird Park, where you can get up close with toucan, macaw and parrot.
Transfer to Iguazu airport and fly on to Manaus; a city that has served as the gateway to the Amazon Rainforest since the rubber boom of the 1800s.
When you arrive, you’ll have the option to take the half day ecological tour of the Bosque da Ciencia park, hosted by the INPA (Amazonas National Research Institute). It showcases the group’s work safeguarding 76 species of native Amazonian animals.
Manaus – Amazon
From the pier at Manaus you’ll board a river boat for the Amazon Ecopark Lodge at Rio Taruma, a short ride north along the Rio Negro. On arrival you’re free to explore the jungle, visit the orchid garden, enjoy hiking and canoeing or simply soak up the special atmosphere of this wild and remote place.
Today we’ll board a riverboat and explore the Rio Negro. On the way you’ll see the Port of Manaus, the stilt houses along the shoreline and the Amazonas Theatre.
Our destination is the Meeting of the Waters, the point at which the Negro and Solimões rivers merge but remain distinct from one another. It’s a fascinating natural phenomenon brought about by the differences in temperature and density.
In the afternoon you’ll return to your hotel.
Amazon – Manaus
Following breakfast, we’ll leave the lodge for Manaus.
On arrival you’ll enjoy a tour of the city, including a stroll around the old town, the clock tower (known as Little Big Ben) and the customs office – which was built in Liverpool and assembled here. The Amazonas Theatre is the city’s most famous sight. It features in Werner Herzog’s classic movie Fitzcarraldo.
Manaus – Salvador da Bahia
Transfer to Manaus airport for your onward flight to Salvador da Bahia.
With its colourful colonial architecture, cobbled streets and irresistibly cheery population, Salvador da Bahia is sure to be one of your favourite stops on the trip. This part of the country has a distinct Afro-Brazilian culture which is reflected in its street art, music and spectacular religious ceremonies.
Salvador da Bahia
Leaving your hotel, you’ll embark on a tour of the city, which provides an insight into its long history. Founded by the Portuguese in 1549, there’s a huge amount to see – from the beautiful modern shoreline and 17th century lighthouse at Barra to the elegant neighbourhood of Corridor da Vittoria.
We’ll also explore the grand downtown area of Pelourinho. This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to some of the most impressive baroque architecture outside Europe. Following the tour, you’re free to wander the city at your own pace.
