Amman – Eastern Desert
After you’ve finished your first Jordanian breakfast, begin your adventure in the famous desert castles in the eastern desert, a testament to the country’s rich history. Awarded UNESCO World Heritage site status, these well preserved 8th century castle ruins demonstrate spectacular early Islamic art and architecture - and some still feature the original colourful frescoes on their walls and floors.
Stop off at Al Kharraneh, one of the earliest built forts of the Islamic era, then head onto Amra Castle, a surprisingly intact residence of the Umayyad caliphs, with beautiful murals that can be seen today. Your final stop will be at Al Azraq, a large crusader castle, where legend has it Lawrence of Arabia lived and wrote part of his renowned Seven Pillars of Wisdom.
You’ll head back to Amman for an overnight stay, where you can relax with a traditional dinner.
Amman - Jerash
In the morning, set off to familiarise yourself with your surroundings in the energetic capital of Amman. The city offers a fascinating mix of historical sites and landmarks, including the Archaeological Museum, the Folklore Museum, the Citadel, the blue mosque and amphitheatre.
Join the locals at one of the bustling souks while you’re here and get an understanding of how the Jordanians live and work.
Your tour continues on to Jerash, where you’ll gain a real insight into its past Roman life. Featuring 56 columns and the second century Hadrian’s Arch, walk the paved and colonnaded streets, take in the majestic hilltop temples, public squares, baths and fountains.
After a day on your feet, sit down to some Jordanian cuisine in Amman and rest for the next day.
Amman – Madaba - Mount Nebo - Umm Ar Rasas – Kerak - Petra
After breakfast, your Wonders of Jordan tour continues with a visit to the charming market town of Madaba, nicknamed the ‘city of mosaics’. Frequented by visitors due to its stunning Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics, this town is most famous for its 6th century mosaic map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land.
From here, you’ll continue on your adventure to explore the sacred mountain, Mount Nebo. According to the Old Testament, this is where Moses is said to have visited and seen the Promised Land. At nearly 1,000 metres tall, enjoy panoramic views of Bethlehem, the Dead Sea and Jerusalem when you walk to the summit.
Next, you’ll journey to the south of Jordan to explore some more castles - Umm Ar Rasas and Kerak Castle. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Umm Ar Rasas is an old city of historic churches and ruins, with disintegrating pillars, archways and forts. Sitting atop the bustling town of Kerak, Kerak Castle is one of the largest crusader castles, built in the 12th century. Take a closer look inside the Crusader’s Gate at this impressive fortress, as well as the prison cells, kitchen, living quarters and church.
Head to your hotel in Petra ready to explore the main highlight your Wonders of Jordan tour the following morning.
A day of awe-inspiring sightseeing awaits you with a tour of Petra, which is also known as Jordan’s ‘rose city’. This is a place of international archaeological and historic significance built in the third century B.C. Given UNESCO World Heritage site status and also named one of the Seven New Wonders of the World, you can admire the pinky coloured sandstone rock formations that climb 80 metres high. Amazingly, these have all been carved into ornate temples and tombs, through a maze of passageways and gorges.
Visit the many sacrificial altars, colonnaded streets and amphitheatres via a number of walking trails. You can also wander around the 7,000 seat amphitheatre, the Royal Tombs and the impressive Great Temple.
Return to your hotel in Petra overnight before embarking on the next stage of your Jordan sightseeing tour.
Petra - Aqaba
Inhabited since 4,000 B.C, Aqaba is a popular choice if you are wishing to combine Jordan’s culture with some fun-filled watersports. The only coastal city in Jordan, Aqaba is situated on the south coast of the country and delivers fantastic scuba diving and snorkelling, thanks to the azure blue waters and Yamanieh coral reef in the Aqaba Marine Park. The beaches here are unspoilt and postcard worthy, and ideal for spending some precious hours relaxing and sunbathing.
At lunchtime, tuck into some fantastic cuisine and a cool drink while you’re here in one of the city’s many varied restaurants and bars. If you have time, squeeze in a trip to Aqaba Fortress, or the Sharif Hussein bin Ali Mosque.
Retreat to your hotel nearby for a delicious dinner, before retiring for the night.
