Day 2

Awassa - Bale Mountain

Full Board

After breakfast, a transfer will take you to the airport for your flight to Awassa. Upon arrival you’ll be collected from the airport and taken to Bale Mountain lodge. Bale Mountain Lodge is located in the virgin Harenna Forest of the Bale Mountains National Park, home to 14 endemic mammal species including 250 of the 400 remaining Ethiopian wolves. Rated as one of the top 5 birding sites in Africa, the national park has multiple habitats and ecosystems making it a 'biodiversity hotspot' and the lodge showcases this amazing park from a remote clearing in the forest.

After checking in to the lodge, you’ll drive to Bale Mountains National Park with a stop at Dinsho – the head quarter of Bale Mountains National Park. Here, you will have the best opportunity to easily spot the Mountain Nyala, Menelik Bushbuck warthogs, and different birds like Abyssinian catbird, Abyssinian long eared owl, white backed black tit etc.

Your trip will then take you to Harena forest one of the largest and most extensive forests remaining in Ethiopia. You will return to Bale Mountain Lodge for dinner and relaxation.

Day 3

Bale Mountain

Full Board

After breakfast, a driver will collect you and take you on a journey up to the Bale massif and onto the Sanetti Plateau, which is between 3800m and 4377m above sea level. The stunning nature of this location offers amazing photography and birding opportunities. This area supports seven globally threatened species of birds and nearly all of Ethiopia’s Highland biome species.

The main focus of the day will be searching for the plateau’s most celebrated resident, the Ethiopian or Simien Wolf, crowned with the unenviable title of “the world’s rarest canid.” Watching these vibrantly colored animals, most closely related to the European Timber Wolf, exhibiting their hunting prowess while pouncing on Giant Mole-rats (another endemic to the Sanetti Plateau), is surely amongst Africa’s greatest wildlife experiences.

Gracefully situated by the idyllic lake of Awassa, home to resident hippos, Haile Resort offers a unique experience of Ethiopian culture. On the drive back to Addis Ababa your next stop will be the Merkato, famous for being the largest open-air market in Africa. Here you will be presented with a vast range of handicrafts and artifacts available from all parts of the country and you can enjoy the Ethiopian trade exchange tradition in the open air.
