Day 2

Siem Reap

An early start this morning will see you on your way to the iconic Angkor Archaeological Parc.

Start your exploration with a visit to the last capital of the Khmer Empire, Angkor Thom. Built in the 12th Century it is believed that the ancient city was deserted some time during the 16th Century.

You will have the opportunity to see the South Gate with its impressive statues depicting the churning ocean of milk, Bayon Temple which is known for its 54 towers decorated with 216 smiling faces of Avolokitesvara, the pyramidal representation of Mount Meru - Baphuon, the  terrace of the Elephants and the legendary Terrace of the Leper King.

From Angkor Thom, continue on towards the famous jungle temple of Ta Prohm, relatively untouched since it was rediscovered, this beautiful temple seems to have been reclaimed by nature.

Stop for lunch at Sala Russey, a local restaurant facing Sra Srang to relax, before continuing your Angkor adventure.

Next up is the most famous of the park's temples, Angkor Wat.

This UNESCO World Heritage site encompasses an impressive 200 acres.

The five towers of the 12th Century temple symbolise Meru's five peaks, the enclosed wall represents the mountains at the edge of the world and the surrounding moat, the ocean beyond.

This afternoon, take part in a sacred Buddhist ritual to receive a spiritual cleansing ceremony performed by the monks. The ceremony begins with the monks chanting harmoniously to wish you good luck, safe travels and a long life whilst lightly sprinkling water. At the end of the ceremony you will receive a special red tie around your wrist to signify that the blessing has been performed.

After the blessing ceremony you will return to your hotel.

  • Meals Breakfast and lunch
  • Suggested Accommodation Sakmut Boutique Hotel or similar
Day 3

Siem Reap

Today you will be driven to Soutr Nikum District (pronounced So Nikum) which occupies a long stretch of shore on the Tonle Sap Lake and is home to one of the largest communities on the water, Kompong Khleang.

Spend a few hours exploring this unique community before driving toward Beng Mealea where you will enjoy a homemade lunch at a local family house located behind the temple area.

After lunch, take a digestive walk on the red dirt road to a small atmospheric satellite temple of Beng Mealea, named Prasat Chhrey, before exploring the long-abandoned ruins of this 11th Century temple, still strangled by the overgrown jungle.

Return to your hotel to enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

  • Meals Breakfast and lunch
  • Suggested Accommodation Sakmut Boutique Hotel or similar
Day 4

Siem Reap

This morning, see the real Siem Reap by scooter-like Honda motorbikes. Go easy on your breakfast as you are in for a little local treat.

Siem Reap town centre is known for pub street, night markets and restaurants, but Siem Reap’s real market centre is Phsar Leu, easily twice the size of Old Market, the city’s largest tourist market.

Visit the "real" market and learn how the locals trade their clothes, toys, electronics, gold, dishware, fish, meats, vegetables... until it is time for your local breakfast!

Your guide will help you to select available food in the market for you to taste and discover what Cambodians eat for breakfast.

Then, time to ride through the back streets of Siem Reap, down to the countryside where you can closely view the daily activities of farmers such as vegetable gardens, rice paddies, lotus farms and fishing.

During this part of the ride you may have as many stops as desired to interact with locals. You will also learn how to throw fishing nets in the pond.

Return back to Siem Reap for lunch and enjoy creative Khmer dishes by Chef Mengly, at his Pou Kitchen and Restaurant

Walk next door to visit “Les Artisans d’Angkor - Chantiers Ecoles”, a centre working with young artisans. The team creates, produce and market a unique collection of ornamental sculpture, lacquer ware, silk weaving and silk painting. The company promotes fair, sustainable development in order to provide benefits to the rural communities.

Continue to visit Rehash Trash, a daily workshop that turns dirty roadside rubbish into incredible stylish stuff. Sadly, raw material is in abundance, discarded plastic bags which are collected each day. Rehash Trash is not only making great products and cleaning up the environment, it is changing and empowering the lives of our mothers and their families.

Take part in a two hour workshop to learn how they really work with these plastic bags and try yourself at making your own creation.

Afterwards take a walk over to visit Sombai Liqueur to discover the local taste of Siem Reap through a wide range of home-made and artisan products. Try 11 different flavours of liqueur (or as many as you can handle), before returning to your hotel.
