Maritim Hotel

Set in tropical grounds overlooking the aptly named Turtle Bay, and on the north west of the island, the Maritim Hotel is a Mauritian paradise.

Just 20 minutes from the bustling capital of Port Louis, the 215 room hotel originally opened on the island in 1990 but was completely renovated just 4 years ago. A tropical hideaway, the hotel has a traditional colonial feel making it seem like a home away from home rather than a large international resort. The open reception area offers a panoramic view of the resort and crystal clear sea beyond which certainly makes for a great first impression.

Day to day, you will find the Maritim to be the perfect spot for some rest and relaxation, whether it’s relaxing by the infinity pool, sunbathing on the beach or enjoying the Tropical Flower Spa which houses 12 treatment pavilions, a sauna and hamam.

For those of you that are more active, there is a multitude of water sports and other activities, including horse riding and cycling. It’s also worth taking the time to explore the estate, taking the meandering footpaths through the 62 acres of lush, tropical gardens.

The Maritim certainly goes the extra mile with its customer service and its added touches which really make it stand out as a beacon of customer service. The hotel will set up a romantic picnic by the Citron River or on the beach, complete with champagne and a tropical hamper, or you can take a romantic horseback ride in the sea. As an extra treat, dine at the hotel’s a la carte restaurant; Château Mon Désir, a gourmet restaurant which is currently ranked number 1 out of 567 restaurants in Mauritius by Trip Advisor – a little tip just for you.

Cuisine is an important part of any holiday and the Maritim offers all inclusive as its standard board basis.  As well as the daily buffet serving international and Mauritian cuisine, there is a pool bar offering snacks and light meals and a beach bar serving fresh seafood and other exotic dishes, which All Inclusive guests receive a credit towards. Check out the feet-in-the-sand beer garden for unwinding at the end of the day and the La Maree beach bar, the perfect location to watch the sun set with a cocktail. The swim up bar in the infinity pool is another great spot to enjoy a Pina Colada or two!

Stay in a Privilege or Prestige room, for fantastic views, luxurious furnishings and added touches like a walk in wardrobe, double sinks and a large free-standing bath tub.

As well as the usual facilities expected of a five-star resort in the Indian Ocean, the Maritim Hotel offers a few unique extras giving it a truly Mauritian atmosphere. Turtle Bay, or Baie aux Tortues, is Mauritius' first Marine National Park, preserving much of the island's underwater life. Its endless white sandy beach is protected by a coral reef and the hotel offers superb snorkelling and diving opportunities – perfect for divers or first-time snorkelers.

In the hotel grounds lie the 62 acre Balaclava estate, only accessible to guests or paying visitors, it holds historical ruins dating back to the 18th century. Built during the French Rule in the 1700s to protect the bay, today the original sea walls of the fortress are readily visible and make for fascinating exploration.

The hotel has a small petting zoo in the grounds for children, where you can meet the native giant tortoises, some of which are over 150 years old. Kept in a pleasant enclosure on the grounds of the hotel, guests are encouraged to interact with the tortoises – make sure to take a banana to tempt them over for a picture.

For those who are travelling as a family there is also a fantastic kids club by the beach. A converted cottage type building, the club offers activities for children of all ages.  Most popular are the cute pony rides – sure to put a smile on your little one’s face!

We would absolutely recommend this hotel for couples and families alike. The Maritim Hotel offers idyllic escape and everything you need for the perfect beach break.
