Find your perfect Maldives island

Katie Parsons June 15, 2015

With over 1,190 islands choosing which island to stay on in the Maldives may seem like searching for one grain of sand on an endless beach. Only 100 are resort islands though, with just one resort per island, which does make it slightly easier!

To help you make your choice, we’ve selected some of our favourite islands and explained what is different about each one.
There’s a lot of choice, so we hope this makes it easier for you to select your favourite.

One thing remains as clear as the ocean and that’s when to visit!  The Maldives is warm all year round, with November to April having the driest months, so whichever fantasy island you prefer, start planning your dream holiday now.

Read on, to hear more about why you should consider the Maldives and which island is best for you, with our handpicked selection of 10 resorts.

Looking for good food?

Don’t worry, just because they are islands, doesn’t mean you’ll only get fish to eat!   We can assure the non fish lovers among you that food is imported regularly, giving you a wide choice of culinary treats, alongside watermelons grown on the islands, plus delicious mangoes, papayas and bananas.    However if you do like your seafood, then there’s plenty to tempt you, with fresh and locally caught lobster, prawns, snapper and tuna on the menu. Traditional Maldivian curries are often made with fish - nice and spicy, with coconut and served with bread called roshi and Maldivian poppadoms.

A firm favourite, LUX Maldives has some renowned dining experiences – under the stars, on the sand, over the water and served directly to your villa. Seven restaurants and bars provide everything you could hope, from all over the world - Maldivian, Indian, Thai and Chinese and a fantastic mix of exquisite and lively venues.

Looking to get active?

Will I get bored?  Yes, it’s true – some people do wonder if a Maldives holiday is the right choice for them. Personally, we would be happy just sitting on the beach staring out at the blue ocean for a week, but if you’re looking for something a little less sedate, there’s plenty to keep you occupied.

Kuredu Island Resort and Spa is a great choice if you want to keep fit and active. The resort is on a large island and has an excellent 6-Hole, Par-3 golf course. A PGA qualified golf professional is available for private lessons and the scenic course is on the eastern side of the island, accompanied by lush forest and the sounds of the ocean.

The club has a full size driving range and equipment hire is free. If golf is not your thing, then there’s football, diving, snorkelling, a state-of-the-art fitness centre, two spas, one with over-the-water facilities and excursions aplenty on one of the Maldives’ largest islands.

Looking to explore beneath the ocean?

"There’s nothing wrong with enjoying looking at the surface of the ocean itself, except that when you finally see what goes on underwater, you realise that you’ve been missing the whole point of the ocean. Staying on the surface all the time is like going to the circus and staring at the outside of the tent." — Dave Barry, Author

Head to Villamendhoo Island Resort and Spa. We’ve never seen a house reef quite like it – it’s spectacular. Only 10 metres from the shore and the drop is incredible.  You simply walk into the water and snorkel to the reef. This is the perfect choice for snorkelling and diving enthusiasts of all experience levels.

Looking for Maldives Luxury?

The word luxury is used a lot these days and often hard to define, and the Maldives has plenty to offer in terms of pampering and high levels of service and exceptional facilities.  The destination itself and the scenery and ambience play a big part in what makes somewhere luxurious. Our Maldives hotels are all located in paradise so you can expect a degree of luxury wherever you stay, however here’s an example to tempt you.

Can you imagine yourself arriving at Malé airport and jetting off by private speedboat to arrive within 15 minutes on your luxurious island paradise? We can and the Taj Exotica Resort and Spa is the epitome of luxury. Book an over water villa with steps down into the water or a spacious beach villa with a private pool and walled garden.  Be pampered at the Jiva Grande Spa and take advantage of the private dining opportunities. Style, elegance and exceptional service throughout can be expected.

Looking for a Maldives honeymoon destination?

Contemporary villas – tick, breathtaking ocean views – tick, superb dining venues – tick, stunning over-water spa – tick, close to popular dive sites – tick, infinity pool with ocean view - tick!

We love the private, quiet and pristine villas at Coco Bodu Hithi, which have private plunge pools, garden and decking area and passage directly onto the beach. And this is just the lead in room category!

From large beach-front Island villas to secluded over-water villas, with plunge pools and bathtubs for two – luxuriously appointed and perfect for a romantic getaway. You can dine in your villa or at one of the restaurants and bars serving eclectic and delicious food, and relax at the island’s main infinity pool with stunning ocean views, while drinks are served to you at your sun lounger.

Maldives holidays for families?

Famously popular with those romantic types wanting to celebrate their honeymoon somewhere exotic and make their friends jealous back home, you may be surprised to hear that the Maldives is also popular with families.   Many hotels have great facilities for children and safe too, as you will always know where they are.

Centara Grand Island Resort and Spa Maldives has Deluxe Water Villas which are ideal for the family. They are situated above the lagoon and have a master bedroom and a fully furnished living room with a partitioned area with bunk beds. The bathrooms have a large rain shower and a Jacuzzi spa bath too.

Camp Safari is where the kids will find their fun. Four to nine year old will be excited when they received their challenge card on arrival, with fun challenges to complete while they’re on holiday, with prizes given when the card is completed.   We can’t understand why they don’t offer this facility to adults too – it sounds so much fun!

Looking to get away from it all?

We couldn’t chose, so we’ve come up with two options. JA Manafaru, is on Manafuru Island, a tropical island paradise a bit further north. You look directly out to the turquoise ocean and there is even a private island nearby for a real Robinson Crusoe experience – take an excursion there and really get away from it all!

Expect all the luxury you could imagine plus an underground wine cellar, activities for all ages, and a range of amazing restaurants.  All the villas come with their own private plunge pool and a dedicated host, to ensure your stay here is perfect.

Mirihi is a TV free island. Don’t panic though, as all the rooms have free Wifi, but TVs are banned!   We love being able to switch off from the world and relax at this resort and just listen to the sound of the ocean lapping on this small and secluded island.   The water villas are built on stilts over the blue lagoon and are beautifully spacious. There’s an exceptional house reef, a dive school and all the villas have direct beach or water access.  Who needs a TV?

Looking for All Inclusive?

We admit, it can get a bit pricey in the Maldives, where a bottle of water can cost £5, so why not avoid all that worry and upgrade to All Inclusive? Atmosphere Kanifushi  has a really generous Platinum Plan all inclusive package, on which drinks are all premium branded.

The activities are endless and you can go sunset fishing once per stay, chose one other free excursion from a selection of six, enjoy non-motorised watersports, unlimited snorkelling excursions – two per day. 50% discounts on one couples massage and 20% off your first two dives if you’re PADI qualified. Kids will enjoy complimentary activities too.

We’d also like to mention that this resort has the first vegetarian restaurant in the Maldives, called “JUST VEG”, serving a unique and delicious all veg menu.

Looking for the best bar spot?

This is a personal favourite of our Indian Ocean destination manager, Zoe.  Centara Ras Fushi Resort and Spa is an intimate adult-orientated resort, which can be reached easily from Malé by speed boat.

“Viu Bar is set over the water, the middle is open with the surroundings decked and the edge in netting like a catamaran. Scattered cushions are dotted everywhere and it is just the most relaxing bar I have ever been too. In the evening there is enough light to spot the fish while enjoying the sea breeze and a delicious island cocktail”.  Zoe, Destination Manager
