Day 1 - Siem Reap
Met on arrival in the morning at Siem Reap airport and transfer to the Angkor complex to visit Angkor Thom, the last capital of the Khmers. Its Elephant Terrace, the Terrace of the Leper King and the stunning Bayon Temple are here. After lunch in a local restaurant, visit Angkor Wat, the largest temple in the world, with a volume of stone equalling that of the Cheops pyramid in Egypt. Inspired by 12th Century Hinduism, its symmetrical towers are stylised on the modern Cambodian flag and took an estimated 30 years to build. After sunset, transfer to the Empress Angkor Hotel or similar for the next two nights. Dinner is at a local restaurant with classical dance show.
Overnight accommodation - Empress Angkor (L,D)
Day 2 - Siem Reap
After breakfast at the hotel, visit Banteay Srey and Banteay Samre Temples. Continue after lunch in a local restaurant to explore the ruins of Neak Pean, Pre Rup, Kravan and Baphoun Temple. The highlight of your afternoon will be Preah Khan 'The Sacred Sword', an extensive monastic complex covering 56 hectares. Enjoy dinner at local restaurant.
Overnight accommodation - Empress Angkor (B,L,D)
Day 3 - Siem Reap
Drive after breakfast to Ton Le Sap Lake, the largest freshwater lake in South East Asia and the lifeblood of the Cambodian fishing industry. Take a ride on a small shaded vessel and move between the floating homes and small fish farms to experience daily lake life close up (during dry season, due to the low water level, the boat trip will be replaced by a visit to a local art and craft centre to experience Khmer culture). After lunch at a local restaurant, visit the temples of Ta Keo and Ta Prohm. Surrounded by jungle, the latter is one of the largest temples of Angkor, dedicated in 1186. Its labyrinth of stone hallways is overgrown with the roots and limbs of massive Banyan trees, which envelope the stone like tentacles. Transfer back to Siem Reap airport in the late afternoon for onward flight. (B,L)
