More than you imagined

From cycling over the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco to kayaking over Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada; California is a place not to be missed.

The state is bursting with natural beauty; its magnificent National Parks are testament to this fact with Yosemite, Redwoods and Death Valley just a few examples. Take your own adventure by driving the Pacific Coast Highway 1 and visit Santa Cruz, Big Sur and Pismo Beach along the way; it’s the perfect way to see what California has to offer. With so many places to explore within this golden state, it’s best to hit the open road.

You can also combine your Californian dream trip with a visit to nearby Hawaii; why not continue the laidback California vibe with a break in the islands of Aloha?

Find more about Los Angeles

Autumn Season

Like spring, autumn is a sweet spot for visiting Los Angeles. Temperatures cool a bit but remain pleasant and the summer smog is blown clear by the Santa Ana winds.

Our Favourite Season

March and April or October and November mark the best months for visiting Los Angeles. During these months the days are sunny and warm, but not hot, and the air is blessedly free of the dreaded Los Angeles smog.

Spring Season

Fewer crowds, pleasant weather, and less smog make spring a great time to visit Los Angeles. The temperatures are comfortable but not hot and the days are generally clear after briefly being washed by rains.

Summer Season

June surprisingly receives less sun in Los Angeles than other summer months as the ‘June Gloom’, a layer of marine fog, descends in the mornings. The rest of the summer is warm and sunny, although smog on very hot days can be a problem.

Winter Season

Winter rains in Los Angeles start in December or January, although it never gets as cold in Los Angeles as northern US cities. After rain showers days can be sunny and pleasant while nights are cool.

Autumn in Yosemite can be a little bit unpredictable, incorporating hot and cold, sun and rain, and even in late autumn, snow. Rain is least likely in early autumn, when temperatures are still mild.

Our Favourite Season

We love Yosemite National Park in April and May when the weather is warm and the waterfalls are spectacular or in June when the vibrant fields of wildflowers are in bloom.

Spring Season

Sunny and warm days are common in Yosemite in the spring, although there is still a chance of the occasional winter storm in early spring. As the warmer weather melts the snow the waterfalls, creeks, and rivers rush with water.

Summer Season

Summer is warm to hot in Yosemite and at the higher elevations you might see the occasional afternoon thundershower, although rain in the summer is generally rare. Most flowers bloom in June.

Winter Season

Yosemite winters are cold and snowy, although crisp, sunny days are not uncommon. Road closures in remote areas are common due to heavy snowfall.

Autumn Season

Autumn is the perfect month to visit San Diego. Once the summer fog, and then the heat, has blown away, the temperatures are comfortably warm with sun shining nearly every day.

Our Favourite Season

Autumn is our favourite time in San Diego. Nearly every day brings blue skies and warm sunny weather and the ocean temperature finally rises to a warm 21°C. In autumn you can visit the surrounding beaches without worrying about excessive crowds.

Spring Season

Spring in San Diego is comfortable and sunny, although early spring brings a higher chance of rain. May brings the ‘May Gray’ and you might experience coastal fog, although the temperatures are still quite pleasant.

Summer Season

May and June in San Diego are often plagued by ‘May Gray’ or June Gloom’, when a coastal fog hangs low over the coast. Usually this disappears by midday and by July and August the sunshine (and heat) has returned in full force.

Winter Season

In winter you might want to bring an umbrella and light rain jacket to San Diego. This is the rainy season, although the temperatures never drop too low, especially when the warm Santa Ana winds blow warm, dry air.

Autumn Season

San Francisco in the autumn is truly magical. Like many California coastal towns, this is when the fog really burns away and the sun shines the brightest. Nights are mild and clear and rainfall is rare.

Our Favourite Season

September to November’s annual ‘Indian Summer’ brings warm temperatures and sunny skies to San Francisco. The entire bay stays smooth and glassy and the warm air sweeping in from the Central Valley makes autumn the best time to visit San Francisco.

Spring Season

Spring sees some of the sunniest, mildest, driest days in San Francisco. Unlike many other US cities, spring sees San Francisco relatively free of showers and temperatures begin to warm up, making spring a perfect time to visit.

Summer Season

San Francisco’s famous fog really kicks into gear in the summer. This is when you will see billowing white fog and sea spray keeping the area overcast and cool. Usually by evening the fog burns off.

Winter Season

Winter temperatures are relatively mild, even in San Francisco’s coldest months December and January. Snow and frost are rare, although rain is not, with storms raging in from Mexico bringing torrential downpours throughout the winter.
