We returned a couple of days ago from Sandos Caracol and wish we were still there. I am very picky about things and will try to address many areas with honesty. We were a family of ...
Read More 4 (husband, wife, 9-year old and 5-year old) that stayed in the Royal Elite Penthouse. I had 2 favorite things about this resort: the grounds and the people! Everyone, with a very small exception (see below), was absolutely lovely, kind and extremely helpful. I can't praise this hard working and enthusiastic staff enough. We were ALWAYS greeted with a smile and all of our requests were happily accommodated. This began even before we left for the trip. Alex Nova, in guest relations, answered all of my emails promptly and arranged our first few nights of dinner reservations, as well as assisted us in obtaining our building request. Thank you Alex for EVERYTHING! A few other notable staff members: Sara by the snack bar at the swings (so friendly and nice); Vicky, Patricia, and Noemi at the Royal Elite restaurant (everyone there was great); and Judy at the Mediterranean restaurant (very observant and helpful). Honestly, I wish I could mention more names, but SO MANY people were terrific, that I can't remember everyone's names. The only place I encountered people that weren't outstanding was at the Water Sports facility on the beach. They had a bit of an attitude, but it could be because I was so spoiled by the friendly people everywhere else. My next favorite - the stunning grounds. It seemed like everyday we discovered another new and interesting spot. People complain about having to walk too much. We enjoyed each and every step, appreciating the opportunity to take in the beauty. The layout is a bit confusing, but fortunately there are maps all over. And the environment is very clean and well maintained - not surprising because the staff takes so much pride in their work. It was such a special treat to have a rainforest-like setting adjacent to the aqua beach water. There are gorgeous paths to explore (such a treat) and beautiful cenotes (not just the large one by the lobby). We also loved the animals everywhere. I was disappointed to have seen only one monkey on the premises, but we did see plenty of other wildlife in addition the the resort's "pets" (burros, deer, macaws, turtles, etc). As an animal lover, this was another high point of Caracol. The water at the beach was a beautiful aqua color, but had some seaweed and rocks in the water. Better swimming water exists up the beach. There were many dining options, which we liked. The food was sometimes good and sometime average to not-so-good. But didn't expect the finest of dining, so we were satisfied. We enjoyed the Japanese restaurant (better than ones we've tried at other resorts), and really liked the Mediterranean's atmosphere, which was an open air beachfront setting. The wait staff at every restaurant was great!!! We enjoyed breakfast at the Mexican buffet when we didn't feeling like sitting down for an a-la-carte breakfast in the Royal Elite section. We had the luxury of not having to dine at any buffets for dinner due to renting our stay through a time share owner, which we recommend. The only way I would ever personally stay at this resort is as a Royal Elite Member. It enables you all the amenities, the special pool and restaurant, and nicer rooms. The regular pool was way too crowded and loud for our taste. The pool at the Adults Section was nice, but we couldn't go there because of the kids. This brings me to a minor complaint - there are no jacuzzis for minors. My kids love to warm up in a jacuzzi after they have been swimming, but this wasn't an option. Another disappointing thing was the kids club. We thought our son and daughter would love it, which would provide us with some adult time. Unfortunately, on their first visit there, my daughter complained that they didn't do the activity scheduled (flower making) and that the workers talked to one another and didn't interact with the kids. Our kids gave it another try, but after that, they refused to go back. My husband and I were surprised because the facility seemed so kid friendly and fun. I guess our kids would have enjoyed it if they had been engaged with more. Our room was in Building 11 (we requested either 1 or 11 to be as close to beachfront as possible). The Penthouse room had a nice view with a large balcony patio. We opted for this room for the jacuzzi tub and large balcony, but it was too small for a family of 4. If we return, we would opt for an adjoining room or an option with 2 bathrooms. The room itself was fine - nothing spectacular, but nice enough. The bed was very comfortable to us. If you're picky about toiletries and toilet paper, bring your own! The ones the resort provides weren't not luxurious by any standards. The room was kept clean daily by the housekeepers, with turndown service only occurring on one night. I don't know why it only happened once, but it wasn't a big deal to us. For the nicest view, try getting Building 1 or 11. If we return, we would try for Building 1 on the other side. Our side was very loud because it was by the main pool (always a lot of entertainment and people in this area). All in all, we genuinely loved our stay. We went with no grand expectations about food or high end luxury (as we would have at a more expensive resort). The gorgeous setting, diverse and beautiful grounds, variety of wildlife, and truly lovely staff made our stay very memorable!

Read More Cid). Just returned from a 7 night vacation with the family. Overall trip was good but I probably wouldn't go back to the same resort. Here are some details and tips: ROOMS Stayed in Royal Elite 1 bedroom room. Room was nice. Had a bottle of red wine, chocolate covered strawberries and some nuts in our room when we arrived which was a nice touch. As others have posted, king bed is rock hard and made noises every time you moved a little. Wasn't the best sleeping experience. Stayed in room 302 which was in building 3 on the first floor. Not a good room for a view as it is in the corner but good for convenience to everything. Also suggest a 2nd or 3rd floor room. For whatever reason, we always had mosquitoes in our room. We called about and they said they would spray but I don't think they ever did anything. Found out that the mosquitoes hang out by the door in the morning so when you open the door in the morning, they all flew in. After figuring this out, we started taking towels and swung them around as we opened the door to try to prevent them from flying in. Weird part is that we didn't encounter that many mosquitoes around the resort at night but did get a few bites. Having 2 bathrooms was definitely nice with 5 of us. Always had a nice clean room and a new towel animal on the bed. FOOD Food was decent. Not spectacular and not terrible. Buffets had a lot of variety but the problem is that it was pretty much the same every day and all buffets had almost the same food, so it didn't really matter which one you went to. Hoping for more grilled chicken options but the buffets rarely had it. Do as many a la carte's as possible to mix it up. For a la cartes, Mediterranean was pretty good, hibachi was great (both food & show), Italian was good, Steak was not very good and Brazilian was ok (meats very dry but deserts were good). Me & my 7 year old both got a stomach bug. His lasted half a day and my lasted a full day. Another family we met had their 5 year old get sick. So it is hit and miss. The Treda tablets they sell at their gift shop ($25) seemed to work pretty good. ENTERTAINMENT Nightly shows were pretty good. All night shows start at 8:30pm CST. For most of them, you will not get a good seat if you come right at that time, especially for the shows that are not at the main theater. Day activities are there if you want them but not overpowering. Did the bike tour, eco tour, played tennis & basketball, all of which were good. There is a ton of things to do on the resort and we didn't even do half of them. BEACH As almost every review mentions, the beach is not very good, but let me clarify a few things. There is no issues with the sand on the beach (i.e., not rocky) but the beach is not very wide at this resort. The problem is the ocean bottom in front of the resort. It is filled with rocks/coral which can not be walked on without some type of protection on your feet. If you walk south (right) about 100 yards, there are patches of water with sandy bottom that are much better than what is in front of the resort and is where we went swimming with the kids when we wanted to hit the open water. I was thinking that the rocky/coral bottom would be better for snorkeling but, no dice. Tried snorkeling a few times (even bringing bread) and never saw one fish in the ocean in front of the resort. Honestly, if you are a beach person, you will be very disappointed with this resort. We spent a day down at the Sandos Playacar and it is night and day difference. Very wide beach with all sandy bottom in the water. SERVICE Service everywhere was great. Never had an issue. The workers all bust their butts down there for very little money. Couple dollars here and there for tips goes a long way and very much appreciated. MISC There are some tents just north of the resort setup all the time where you can buy stuff, get massages, rent waverunners and do photography sessions, all of which are much cheaper than doing the same at the resort. My wife had a 1 hour massage ($35) which she said was pretty good. I rented a waverunner for $45 for half hour ($60 at resort). We also did a photo session and paid $100 for 20 pictures but was not impressed at all. We were squinting in most pictures and the resolution they provided was only 8MP which isn't very good for today's technology. Regarding the cenote on the resort you can swim in, don't make the mistake and put suntan lotion on before you go there like we did, cause they make you wash it all off before you go in. It was cool to do but there were not very many fish in there and all the ones we did see were the same and not colorful. Overall, we had a good time but probably wouldn't return mainly because of the beach and also we like to try new places.

Read More time, feeling like you are deep in the jungle. One such example is the natural water reservoir, the sinkhole, where you can swim and observe all kinds of fresh water fish and turtles. It's breathtaking and while you are in it, it is hard to imagine that you are swimming just outside of the front lobby. Rufo, the sinkhole attendant, like all other resort staff is the friendliest, nicest guy you will ever meet. My 8 year old son was first afraid going into the water and Rufo made him laugh and feel so comfortable that my son kept coming back to the sinkhole area just to say hello to Rufo.

Read More dealt with these issues was what drew us to the Sandos Caracol. We contacted staff by email and received prompt responses from Alex Nova Cruz which made us become more comfortable with our choice. Upon check-in we obtained a letter (in Spanish) to provide to chefs at all of the restaurants. LaLaguna was where we had the majority of our meals. Our first day, Chef Alex walked as through the buffets showing us what was dairy and peanut free. Chefs at LaLaguna, La Toscana and Las Masacaras were readily available to help us choose safe foods and were more than willing to prepare separate dishes whenever we requested. Special thanks to Mario and Alex. And to Javier and Renaud from the Mexican and cheerful Sonia from Laguna. We had one very serious mistake with the Brazilian restaurant. Staff were very pleasant and eager to assist but it was hard to get a definitive answer on the side dishes. Even though we had the Spanish letter, I don't think the seriousness of our concerns was relayed to some of the servers. A plate with a side dish of potatoes was put in front of my son. Fortunately, we questioned staff and they went back to the chef to check before he ate it because the potatoes were cooked in butter. We had no other issues and would definitely go back.

Read More definitely showing their age (poor water temperature, lack of air conditioning), but I hear those rooms will be torn down next month. On our third night after several complaints, our room was upgraded to the new portion of the hotels and was AMAZING! The wedding was definitely what we paid for; with very little work on our part. Marine and her team were so efficient, we had almost everything chosen and ready to go before we got there - we were able to hit the beach right off the plane. Everything moved along like clockwork, though no one was aware of the gears moving in the background. We had a total of twenty in our party and no one could find anything to complain about. We were able to get group bookings in the a la cartes every night and the food was always fabulous and the service first class. There was always a great spot at the beach or near the pool with lots of activities for everyone, should they choose to participate. We also hired our photographer through the hotel photo shop. Lillo was fantastic; he made everyone comfortable and look fabulous - we have the pictures to prove it! The price was right and we couldn't even compare the value of it back home. Thank you to all who made our stay magical and our day memorable for a lifetime.
