About Mauritius

Mauritius Holidays Mauritius is a diverse tropical island, bringing together Indian, French, Creole and Chinese cultural influences. Like a scene from one of Gauguin's paintings, its tropical landscape is a beautiful mix of jungle-covered mountains, waterfalls, sugar cane fields and white sand beaches. The island's colonial history and cosmopolitan lifestyle make this a great place to explore, with the rhythm of the Séga dance keeping it very much alive. Mauritius is a beautiful beach holiday destination.

Our Travellers Guide

Beaches
The whole island is renowned for having fine beaches, with the east coast's 10km stretch at Belle Mare regarded as one of the best. Grand Baie offers excellent watersports and the beautiful beach at Le Morne stretches for 4km along the South West peninsula.

Sports
Scuba diving, boat trips and deep-sea fishing are all the rage in Mauritius. Explore the marine life with an undersea walk, strolling the ocean bed, wearing unique diving gear. Trekking and mountain biking offer great coastline views and golf is also popular.

Local tastes
Dholl, yellow split peas, feature heavily in Mauritian recipes, with specialities including dholl purri, wheat pancake stuffed with dholl and served with a tomato sauce and gâteaux piments; dholl and chillies deep-fried in batter. You’ll find samosas served at most roadside stalls. Chicken, beef and fish curry are very popular as well as seafood, particularly snapper. Try Phoenix beer and be blown away by Green Island rum.

Evening flavour
Séga dancing is the soul of Mauritius, with weekly performances in most of the hotels. The best place to experience the island’s nightlife is Grand Baie, which comes to life with open air cocktail bars, sunset cafés and nightclubs. Head to Port Louis’ waterfront for live music and sophisticated watering holes. Nightlife in the other resorts is mainly hotel-based, with casino nights and cultural shows.

Best buys
Bargain for handcrafted model ships, leather, pottery, knitwear, jewellery, spices, vanilla tea and rum. There are clothes shops and stylish boutiques in Grand Baie and an excellent craft market in Port Louis. You’ll see the dodo, once native to Mauritius, on almost everything, from T-shirts to woodwork. Please note: Airline companies charge for freight on model ships, according to size and weight.

Live the Experience
Enjoy panoramic island views from the extinct volcano crater of Trou aux Cerfs, near Curepipe. See the beautiful lake of Grand Bassin, site of an annual Hindu pilgrimage known as Maha Shivaratri. Don’t miss the sevencoloured earths of Chamarel, beautifully toned dunes, shaped by the uneven cooling of molten rock. Explore the Black River Gorges National Park in the Central Plateau, famous for its waterfalls, rare birds, scenic views and hiking trails.
