About Egypt
Few countries can rival Egypt, a land that showcases its ancient wonders to the world. In the chaotic bustle of Cairo, your senses go into overdrive as you face the great Pyramids of Giza, wade through hazy sheesha cafés and watch the swirling skirts of sufi dancers. Compelling and striking, travel south through Egypt towards the Sinai Peninsula and you’ll find the coral reefs of the Red Sea Riviera waiting like a bona fide jewel.
Our Travellers Guide to Egypt
Beaches
Due to Cairo’s and Luxor’s inland position, beaches are few and far between, nevertheless, midday heat can always be soothed with a dip in a hotel pool. The Sinai Peninsula, bordering the Gulf of Aqaba and the Red Sea, is definitely the place to be if you want long stretches of golden sand beach and refreshing waters.
Sports
Horse riding out to the pyramids is a great way to view the wonders of Cairo; alternatively felucca rides along the Nile are a very popular pastime. Sports in Cairo and Luxor come second in status to the ancient world on display. For world-renowned diving, the only place to be is the Red Sea Riviera.
Local tastes
Egypt offers a variety of international and local foods suitable for most palates. Many local dishes are aromatically seasoned, with shish kebab being one of the favourites. Egypt’s national drink is Chai, a refreshing black tea usually served with sugar, so it doesn’t take long for most British visitors to feel right at home.
Evening flavour
A hive of activity, Cairo at night means crowded bazaars, lights and bustle, with the heady scent of sheesha pipes floating along the streets. The most popular nightspot for trendy bars is the area of Zamalek; alternatively, traditional entertainment comes in the form of belly dancers and snake charmers. Geared towards foreigners, Sharm has many outdoor cafés and modern terrace bars, which attract young, international crowds to Egypt’s premier resort.
Best buys
Along with the usual tourist kitsch, Cairo and Luxor have plenty of boutiques where you can haggle over colourful spices, including cumin, coriander and saffron. Other good buys include silk scarves, sheesha pipes and jewellery decorated with mother-of-pearl. Sharm also has the usual tourist offerings, along with a selection of shopping plazas.
Live the Experience
Admire one of the seven wonders of the world at the Great Pyramids of Giza in Cairo. Sail down the Nile in a felucca as the sun sets over Luxor or walk through the spectacular Valley of the Kings. Discover multi-coloured and exotic marine life in Egypt’s beautiful Red Sea and admire the vast desert landscape of the Sinai Peninsula.
